1971 911T Targa Buy or Run Away ?!?!?

i'm looking at this 71 targa. motor is a 2.4 with zenith carbs that seller says ran a year ago but now wont turn (at least not first attempt by hand).
car is pretty solid on the floors other than the front pan. but it's got some super bracket holding the front suspension so the pan isn't even nesesary. he says he can get the front bumper from his buddy.
owner has had the car since 1981 and was a supposed one owner car at that point. he has a clean title in his name from '81
he tells me his price. i agree. then i see this:

opinions ???? my plan was to resell this car. i think that may be a problem though.
i forgot to take a pic of the windshield pillar. but that vin looks more rigged than this one. they didn't even bother to rivet it in place - they stuck two small flat head screws in there.
is there somewhere else i could look for the original vin to the car? like a stamp under the knee pad by the glovebox or something like that?

Drola,
That VIN stamp in the trunk is totally wrong. It is a fabricated piece of sheet metal that appears to have been riveted over where the correct one should be, and the correct one should be stamped directly into the body metal itself. If this is any indication of the car, you should run away. The car could well be stolen and retitled under a fake VIN.

+1

As Monty Python so aptly put it "Run Away! Run Away! Run Away!"

But the question remains.....
is there somewhere else on the car that i can get a vin #? i'm pretty sure i read that on the metal under the glovebox behind the pad there is a stamp? I just dont remember if this is also true for a 71. I would like to check on that so i can use it for leverage. If it has been swapped then it still makes a good parts car. I'll have a bill of sale and a title as a CYA

It will be stamped under the knee pad on the pass. side. This is the one place that is always missed by the # swappers, as most don't know it is there and it is a pain to get the knee pad off.

too many fish in the sea to chase this one. seller was not all that motivated anyway and i decided it's not worth the hassle.
sad part is that it will just continue to sit and rot. damn shame

The only way that thing would pass the vin check when transferring it over is if you picked the old lady at the DMV that, all of a sudden, can't use her left side of her body and has a twitch.

What a horrible swap.

All that car would do is create a huge headache. Walk away slowly, don't turn your back and no swift/jerking movements.

Funny, because in my state they would never look in the truck. They would read it off the front door post, unless missing. I know no cars like Porsche that listed the VIN in three locations for the old long hoods cars. Today many cars list the VIN on every major body part, like Honda. This way you can tell if parts have been replaced.

But states are all different, I just bought a car in New Orleans and they still need it notary, and get this 2 witnesses to sign off. My state no notary, no need to have seller, just a sign off.
