Doing business from a distance
Buying a car without being able to see it by yourself, drive it or even touch it is not without risk. Personally I fell for a 1984 Carrera located in Oregon and I'm living in Quebec, Canada. This was my first Porsche, my first deal made from a distance and my first of many things...
I wanted to let you know that I had a very good experience doing business with Eric Sheet from Eric Sheet Int'l. He made me confident throughout the process. He and his wife were very helpful with every step from PPI to delivery and even technical information for customs transaction. I know that this forum is not for publicity but I needed to let some of you know that there is people out there that are honest and that you can count on. Thank you Eric Martin |

I did the same as you. Only I bought a car from Quebec, Canada and had it shipped to British Columbia, Canada. How funny is that.

I've bought several cars long distance without ever seeing them myself. In fact, more than half the cars I've ever had. A reputable shop to do a thorough PPI is the absolute key critical component of doing so safely. And this board is an excellent place to find a reputable shop, even if it's not for Porsche.

I've bought & sold 3 cars this way. Even just by email, I can always tell if they are someone I trust or not, but a phone call is always the tell

I agree with the phone call. You can tell a lot about a seller by chatting with them for 5 minutes on the phone. I also strongly recommend a PPI whenever possible. A $20,000 Carrera can easily turn into a $30k car with one major repair.

This is a key element to my dealership here in Colorado. As a licensed dealer I am passionate about accurately representing the cars so that the potential buyer knows the flaws as well as the strengths of the car under consideration. I welcome PPI's and take between 25 - 100 photo's of each car in order to provide the potential customer an accurate description of the car. Let's face it, any Porsche is a lot of money and it's important to make sure the customer has all of the information they need to make a decision.

After having an owner try to screw both myself and another Pelican before me, I'll never buy another car sight unseen (yes, I paid dearly for a PPI that was completely inaccurate...other than to question at deposition).
If you want to buy right the first time, be proud of your purchase and own for the long run go look at and drive the car yourself. If it's your first Porsche, consider bringing someone with experience...and bring a paint meter. If it looks good and you're satisfied with how it meters, be prepared to buy it right there or put some fully refundable money down and consider a formal PPI by someone with a great reputation. |
