75S value
 

I've come across a 75S hard top for sale.
It has had rear flares added early in its life and is wearing a duck tail.
Pros: 2.7 was rebuilt a few years ago and webers were upgraded to 40mm. At the same time brakes were serviced and a clutch went in.

Cons: Paint has aged differently between factory paint and aftermarket paint when flares were done.
Scrapes and scratches in places
Most all rubber/gaskets are in rough shape
Tach doesn't work
Turn signals don't work
Rear deck/ducktail does not latch
Rust at bottom edges of doors, a few spots on fenders, bubbles by windshield and headlight buckets, leading edge of hood. No easily noticed structural rust.
Windshield leaks at the top in the rain
Dash is cracked
Driver manual window regulator broken. Door Panel off and you pull it up and down and scotch it by hand.
No spare, pump, tool kit, jack,
Smugglers box lid is missing,and hole cut in bottom of box to add a speaker for the passenger compartment.(Stereo doesn't work)
No carpet in frunk or in front floor boards.


No documentation on the car other than the receipts for engine rebuild by a reputable shop.

I'm on the fence about even making an offer because it could be(would be) a money pit.
I'm trying to figure out where to put a value. I'm honestly thinking that it might be worth $7k to the right person, but less for me personally.

I'd say $7000 absolute tops, depending on the amount of rust. It needs sorting out even without the rust, say $4000-5000... Have you driven it? Does it even "go"?

I have driven it, and it runs out OK. It has a sport exhaust and is loud. The tach doesn't work, so it is hard to really wring it out. The owner said he didn't think it had a rev limiter anymore, so I didn't want to push it that much. It is as quick as you would expect for a 2.7 with webbers and a free flowing exhaust.
I didn't notice any smoking, but then again, it didn't have a rear view mirror either!

Honestly, the days of running and driving '75 911S in the $4000-$5000 range are gone. I have studied the market for 5 years, and a '75 911S for $4-$5K here in Southern California lasts about 12 hours on craigslist. I have seen them in the past 6 months, and when they are in the $5K range, they don't last overnight. And these are non-drivers. I would say $6500 is a fair starting point, but realistically I believe you are right in saying $7k.

If a leakdown confirms engine build receipts, and the brakes were done, you would have a pretty nice beater to drive all year long. At $7k who cares if it leaks a little bit in the rain? Even at his asking price (~$9k) seems like a decent deal if engine checks out.

I agree with you both CountD and BK911. There is just so much value to be had in a $10k-$12k SC or 3.2 Carrera. I look at what this car needs and all of a sudden it makes more sense to spend a little more up front. My last two 911's were a 77 C3 and a 85 3.2 and I paid less than $10k for them and they needed next to nothing up front.

UT orange is a plus but the pics make the car look MUCH better.
I went and drove the car expecting to buy it at $9k but am now on the fence whether I want it at all.
I think it needs $5k or more worth of work to make it a $12k car.

It sounds nice and is a 911, which is more than what I have now. Just driving it made me really miss not having one, and this car defnately has potential if somebody woud just love on it a little. I sit up at night thinking about getting the car and sorting it out.

Yes, there is a huge amount of value in a SC or Carrera. I have seen around 4 SCs that I would have bought in the FOR SALE section in the last two months alone, one SC at $9,000 the other at $9,500, and there was another car that went cheap. If you are on the fence (which is a good place to be before jumping in) take a bit longer. I mean, if you want to sort it, and are in the sorting mood then OK. But right now is a buyers market - I honestly I have not seen so many cars on the market in years. There are so many cars on the market now for some reason, and some really, really nice ones. Sellers have a right to expect to get around $7k for a running 911. But for buyers, it might not be the right choice.

There was this guy in Florida that was selling off his collection of 911s. I don't know if you caught any of that action on eBay, but he even sold a SC Targa for around $5250. Yes, and it ended two weeks ago. It was clean but in storage awhile. He also sold off another 11 cars are so, some clean cars going in the $5-$6K region.

Anyone knows that the car you are looking it will take $3K of sorting. It's the way it is. If you really have a connection with car, then get it. If not, well...

Yeah, I offered the owner $6500 for the car and it's a no go. I think somebody will buy it, but it's not for me right now for more than that.
The flares are fiberglass and you can see the texture of the filler in the paint, there is other filler in the car. The windshieldframe has a soft spot of rust on the inner side near the door. The turbo fender sitckers peeling off.
The rubber on the door jambs is coming off.
There are just so many little things that add up.

I think the car has potential, but the end value has to be kept in mind and I just can't jusify it for a '75.

Sweet - so you got it. It looks like a nice car. The ducktail for me makes it look the business, and the color isn't too bad either. I think you should start a thread on how it's going along. So the final price wasn't $6500?

It's in my garage now. It came with some spares!
4 - 16x6 Fuchs (2 with new bridgestones)
2 - 16x7 Fuchs with new bridgestones
2 - 15x7 Fuchs replicas with Toyo R888s
2 - 15x8 Fuchs replicas with Toyo R888s
4 -17" boxster wheels with Hoosier A6s, 996 part number
plus the Fuchs that are on it. They are 15x7 and 8.

Funny. The car has a good number of hours into it now just getting it sorted, but it is turning out pretty well.
New headlight switch, all new bulbs, regrounded EVERYTHING, new seals on the headlights and rear lights, added relays for the headlights, oil change, flasher relay, Rebuilt window regulators, etc.... And a lot of general going over. She runs out well and sounds amazing. Rebuilt 2.7 with reground and advanced S cams, 40mm webbers, SSIs and a 2 in 2 out exhaust. Here are some pics of the go parts. I'll get some full shots of the car soon.
