I can't believe how cheap Cayennes go for.
Wasn't a 2004 selling for around $70K new? My 2004 4Runner is worth more. Even with 120K miles.

Cayennes are the fastest depreciating vehicle pretty much anywhere. Not just Porsche, but marketwide. And they are among the most expensive to maintain.

Here is an 04 Cayenne a little cheaper with only 74,000 miles
Eight Cylinder 2004 Porsche Cayenne 06 with 50,000 miles for $10K, just needs some electrical work... 06 Porsche Cayenne With Under 50k Original Miles Turbo would be fun. 2004 Porsche Cayenne Turbo, $21,995 - Cars.com Excellence just had a article about them in the recent Porsche buyers guide. |
I agree - it's nuts just how cheap you can pick one up.
Tried to talk the Mrs. into buying a nice used Turbo Cayenne - answer was no... and $4Xk later we had a new Jeep Grand Cherokee. Drove a an 08 Cayenne GTS and, while I'm not an SUV guy, that was one incredible vehicle. |
I snagged a 2006 Cayenne V6 on th cheap and it has been one of my better moves. Drives like a dream and tows like a proper truck.
Insurance is low and it gets 18 mpg. |
Here is a good deal (no affiliation). Car is listed at $12,500. A while ago it was listed at $29,995. Tells you something about the market for these.

Curious, what mileage were your cars owned with? From the stories on the internet it sound like mostly 03/04 had problems at low-ish miles and were covered under warranty. I think the coil and cardan shaft problems were mostly figured out. Still though, doesnt mean you couldnt buy one with things about to go wrong, so the idea of owning one without a CPO or at least a 3rd party warranty is a little scary to me. Lots of car for the money. I'd really like an 08+ S |

I think that if you are a pretty good DIY mech these can be a good buy. The coolant pipes being a big one that takes some wrenching skills. If you don't have any skills these can become a nightmare especially if you use a dealer. I think the low prices are warranted because of the uncertainty over the reliability and ownership costs.

Is there a good DIY network on these early pepperwagons yet? The price sure is very tempting, but if something goes and you are on your own, it won't be any fun.

6speedonline.com also has very good info with lots of tech info on Peppers.
I have been considering an '08 or so.... This tech help makes a huge difference if you are handy. If you think these depreciate, try owning a big Audi! Lovely cars but never again. JR |
GTS V8 Was available with 3 pedals....

I was looking at what I posted above and forgot one sentence.... I do think the early turbos that have enough miles to have most things dealt with are one of the best bangs for the buck available. Where else can you get that kind of performance and engineering for 20 to 30 grand????
