has anyone sold a 911 to a california resident?

hi,

Sadly i am selling my non california emissions 911 1987 Porsche 911 Targa

Has anyone ever sold a 911 to a California resident? I want to make sure the car will pass emissions there. Yet not crystal clear on the emissions limits. I found this chart
http://www.smogcheck.ca.gov/80_BARResources/ftp/pdfdocs/TSI_Cutpoints_table-Jan_2007.pdf
but i am not sure how can i be confident the buyer wont have any issues registering the car.

regards,

Mauricio

The levels are quite easy to pass for a 1987 vehicle (Hc, Co, No, etc. )
But it is all about the visual inspection. If any single hose, sensor or control is missing it is an immediate fail.

it is possible to go to a BAR ref, but that has some risk.

We love 1975 or earlier cars in CA (exempt, with exceptions in case of modification) because the catalytic converters, air pumps, etc. have almost always been removed and can be extremely expensive to replace.

Visual inspection includes :
Positive Crankcase Ventilation
Fuel Evaporative System w/ canister
Catalytic Converter
Fill Pipe Restrictor
Exhaust Gas Recirculation System
Oxygen sensor
Validation of Computerized Engine Controls

one Check list:

What does the emissions sticker say? Porsche eventually (late 80s IIRC) made their cars 50-state compliant.

My '89 says, "CAlif. Emissions" on the window sticker right above 'Estimated Annual Fuel Cost'. But it is a Calif. car.

That should not be a probem. But that list above is from 95 - generally they are more forgiving as cars get older, but it is more difficult now, as they use a dyno (use to be 1100 max idle + 2500 min run)
15MPH:
Hc 121PPM CO 0.76% NO 807PPM
25MPH:
Hc 96PPM CO 0.65% NO 746PPM

Out of state is a problem (unless you have the 50 state sticker)
exceptions are:
(you can go drive you car to that state and have it destroyed or stolen :-)

If you are moving to California from another state, you may register a new 49-State vehicle if it was first registered by you in your home state, or for military personnel, in the last state of your military service. When applying for vehicle registration in California, you must provide evidence that the vehicle was registered.
or

Obtained as part of a divorce, inheritance, or a legal separation settlement
Purchased it to replace your California registered vehicle stolen while you were using it out of state.

Purchased it to replace your California registered vehicle that was destroyed or made inoperative beyond reasonable repair while you were using it out of state.
An emergency vehicle, pursuant to California Vehicle Code § 27156.2 and 27156.3.
Registered by you in the state of your last active military service outside California.

Long time lurker, first time poster.

I'm a CA resident who's been shopping for cars in and out of state.

Here's a link That I found helpful regarding out of state car smog issues in CA:
Before Buying a Vehicle From Out of State - Be Sure You Can Register It in California FFVR 29
