Sell in Austin or Los Angeles, and when?
I live in Austin and I'm moving to LA soon. I'm thinking of selling both my beloved 3.2 Targa hot-rod AND my '08 Cayenne GTS 6-speed mistress to fund a no-gas (and maybe no fun) Tesla - due to an expected 7-10 hour a week commute and not enough garage space for an extra car.
Question #1. Will the market heat up a little more if I hold the Targa 'til March or April? Question #2. Maybe I should part with the Cayenne now, as it's under CPO thru May? Question #3. Would either of them bring significantly more $$$ in CA? It'll probably cost me $2K to ship both cars, then another $1.5K (?) to register / smog. Thanks for your thoughts. Dave911

There is a marked seasonality in "fun" cars. Less so for the cayenne.
If you're already set on selling, I would work out an ask for both cars and list them now, and if you're prepared to wait until the spring you can just stick to your offer and wait for someone to lift it or bid very close to it.

There is a cayenne GTS lurking in this forum in the mid 20s for reference

Generally Cal. is a good place to buy cars, not sell them, because there is more to choose from for the buyer and more competition for the seller, you.
Whatever you do I would advertise for a national market and not a local one so whether you live in Cal. or Austin does not matter. Bringing a car into and titling it in Cal. will just take money away from your bottom line. SO, Sell before you make your move, advertising here and on E-bay, sell and move lite. |

Sell before you move for the reasons listed above. You won't get more in CA and there are costs involved in getting there to sell.
The 3.2 should sell easily if priced properly. Very little seasonality in air cooled car sales these days and people in Texas drive them all winter long. If, for some reason, you don't manage to sell the Cayenne before the move maybe trade it in for the Tesla?

If your 3.2 is a "hot rod" it may not meet CA smog standards. Some 3.2 owners seem to have difficultly getting their cars to run clean (I've never experienced that issue, myself, so YMMV.)
So Cal is a 'market center' and many cars sold here end up all over the US; all over the world. I doubt there's a lot of difference in market value, as I've been reliably informed they have the Internet in TX. Listen to Ficke.

Not to hijack, but I thought it was CIS cars that were struggling to pass CA smog. The 3.2s with an ECU seem to run cleaner.

I'm not so sure listing/selling nationally is always the way to go. There are more than enough buyers these days for air cooled cars, demand outreaching supply. Locally, you get to meet the buyer face to face, he gets to see the car without getting on a plane, communication is easier and PPI's can even be avoided. PCA is a solid sellers paradise.
Plus, I'm not all that sure you'll get more money nationally or internationally, unless you're talking about a very special hot rod. Personally, I'd always prefer to buy locally, and would be more likely to meet the asking price after 'my boys' have gone over the car. But hey, that's just me. ![]()

As usual on Pelican...thoughtful input. Thanks. Sounds like there's not much value in waiting for warmer weather nor for bringing the car / truck to CA. I'm gonna test drive the Tesla this Friday, then decide on IF / when to sell. Thanks all. Dave911

Not to hijack the thread, but why a Tesla?

Sidetrack is fine, Rick. Why Tesla? Fuel savings and they look pretty cool.

Why not a Panamera hybrid?

All good ideas. I'm hoping the house in LA will be big enough, that I don't have to take over the garage for an office / kids homework room, too. In that case, I'll keep the Targa, and ditch the Cayenne in favor of a Prius or some other vacuum cleaner-like device. Out. D

Still here

Last week, I was stuck behind what I thought was a minivan during my evening commute.
I was surprised to find out it was a Cayenne. Oh, it's a Porsche. |

Targa deal done. 24 hours. Wow.
Drove the big motor'd Tesla today. Insane speed, but too sterile for my taste. My buddy suggests driving for a whole day, but I'm really concerned here. Might have to keep the miniva...errr...Cayenne GTS and resign myself to 13MPG.

Not surprised. Good for you. Targas are loved.
