Hello Forum
Can anyone please look at the attachment and tell me if this is a salvage tag? It is in the door jam - B Pillar of a 1979 930 turbo Thank you! ![]() |

If it was a 1979 the 4th VIN number would be a 9 not an 8. The 5th number, which is 7, identifies it as a ROW Turbo. Someone who has knowledge on Grey Market Cert Tags might be able to explain the 1/5/79 DATE OF MFG.

Thanks again for further clarification of the Grey market sticker. I never cease to be pleasantly surprised by the knowledge and support of our community.

I would wager that the 1/79 date is when the car was presented/certified for US use (maybe EPA/DOT paperwork signoff date?)

Grey Market for sure. I worked for a very reputable Ferrari conversion shop in CT in the 1980s while in high school. The 'Date Of Manufacture' on the tag is an arbitrary date, it is sometimes when the conversion is finished, when it was picked up in New Jersey at the pier after US Customs clearance, but usually when the certification work is finished. Check the doors for the dreaded 'broom stick' wood safety impact bars, etc. Berlin Motors does not ring a bell and I was in that area. Many shady people and organizations were bringing in cars and making a fast buck. But it may very well be a good car.
But to get as close as I can to your question, the sticker is put there BEFORE the EPA/DOT certs are applied for by the importing company because a photograph must be taken of it when the paperwork is presented for certification. Last edited by CountD; 10-26-2012 at 06:33 PM.. |

Now that you mention it, I do recall hearing of 'wooden' side impact bars being installed years ago. Would seem you could never be too careful in your inspection of one of there cars.
