Can engine swap car be registered in CA?
If you buy an already swapped car can it be registered in CA? I'm thinking 80's Carrera with 3.6.
TIA.

Smog check will be an issue. Car will need to be inspected by Bureau of Automotive Repair, who will provide a special sticker and car will need to qualify for emissions regulations applicable to the new motor. This means catalytic converter, no carbs, stock airbox & exhaust, etc. A real PITA.

Here is an example (not mine) of a car that has had an engine swap that looks like it was approved by the BAR:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-cars-sale/722132-1977-911-w-3-2-liter-swap-18-000-a.html See the last photo with the BAR sticker - this tells the smog station what they need to test. Not impossible, but a PITA

Going through the process of trying to pass smog on a 3.6 in my 78 SC. Yes a little bit of a pain in the ass, but almost there. Just fail low speed Nox, everything else is okay. Hope to pass this week or next with stock chip, new cat, new O2 sensor and a bit more back pressure to lower combustion chamber temp.
Wish me luck. |
