1972 911S Targa fixer value help please
I'm negotiating to buy a 1972 911S targa and I'd really enjoy some informed opinions about what it is worth. The car is a total restoration project so I will highlight the good points and bad and post a few pictures.
The good: 98% rust free, 72S, It is taken down to the bare body with the wiring in it, some interior and the glass and body parts like doors and fenders on it (I'm suppose to be getting all of the trim and interior pieces for the car). Original black car. good hood, doors, fenders etc, solid rockers, floors etc. I get a good used targa top. I'm estimating that I'm getting 95% of the parts for the car and that most of them are in good shape. Car is in a dry part of California. Looks like an original CA car to me because of how dry and rust free it is. The bad: no engine, no fuchs alloys (i'm getting steel ones, wow), was hit pretty hard in the front right corner now 90% fixed and a pretty good job too (needs finish work), paint obviously shot. Carpet shot. Will need all rubber replaced. All mechanical parts will need to be rebuilt (brakes etc). The owner took the front vin plate off the car when the front was repaired and thinks he can find it so please estimate a price with and without this important item. The other 3 areas with a vin number (near gas tank, sticker on the door and the one on windshield post match and confirm it is a 72 S). Current owner has had it over 10 years has a bill of sale but no title and will write me a bill of sale. I live in Oregon where it is pretty easy to title a car like this. Thanks ![]()

I'll offer my opinion - and bear in mind the 1972 911S is one of my absolute favorites. I've wanted one since I was 16.
But - Forget about it. A really nice 72S is worth some change but this car doesn't even have the original motor, in fact no motor at all. Do you have a line on a 72S motor? The fact that the VIN plate has been messed with really bothers me too. The restoration costs alone will be huge money. Unless only a 72S targa will do for you, I wouldn't undertake this sort of project. But that's just me. What would I pay? Honestly, I can see $1,000-$2,000 for a roller with a 72S VIN. I may be off but that would be my limit. Hope that helps. It's a huge project and good luck with your decision.

I would say the parts alone are worth $2K and that is the best value for that car. But if it is a labour of love and money is no object-- go for it. Otherwise buy a running car as that is a money pit.

Update: the guy I'm buying it from found the front VIN plate. Now all 4 numbers match each other. I did mention that I'm getting all of the interior and exterior parts that go with the car. The seller rebuilt and parted out 911's for 30 years, He has a room full of excellant used seats and interior pieces and I'll get my pick of those and all the best lights etc that he has. Is it still worth $1000-$2000? I'm thinking more.
I really do appreciate your input. Thanks

Is the 915 Trans there? Is the rear lid aluminum? Spoiler bumper? a/c? It is really is a parts car unless you just want to put it back together for fun and have $3k for a decent 911T motor. Then you'll have $5k in it not counting your time at $1 an hour. Add a Maaco paint job and your near $6k. Can buy cars that need less work for around that. Would be fun though!

no title, and it's stripped? ummm, take that VIN, and ask the cops to do a double check on it, as you're looking into getting a car that has no title.
self protection. it could be kind of like that vette that customs caught and returned to the original owner after it was stolen from him in 1969. sjd

Bringing this one back from the dead to see if 7 years has changed opinions on a car in this condition. Is this still a $2k car?

Tangerine911S, that is pretty funny thanks for reminding me about this car....and the opinions of the "experts" and "pundits".
I ebayed it right away, way back then and it easily brought $10,000 back in 06, no engine, no fuchs, no trans etc. I may have forgotten to mention it was an original black car...so 72S black targa, pretty rare bird. The body was 100% rust free except for some in the battery area. It needed some body work but not bad, nothing major. Anyone have any cars like this they would like to sell for $2000? Wayne?....just kidding, lol

It went somewhere down south, I never heard about it again. By the way the metal stamped vin number was there, and the door one and the one in the window post. The one for the front latch panel was in the glove box...unharmed
Here is the number, it was the 20th targa apparently ![]()

I'd love to know more about what happened to it, what search term should I use to find it over there?

Cool I just emailed him (Mike Baum). Just curious if he ever did anything with the car.

That's one of my pet peaves. Marketplace is not the place to get marketplace values, just another opinion board which is ok too. Just don't expect too much. A cpl guys here seem very knoledgable and helpful though.
