Price for an 84 silver/black Carrera Sunroof coupe w/36k miles (updated with pics)
I have a friend that is about to put up his 1984 silver exterior and black interior Carrera. The car appears to be stock with the exception of an alpine cassette deck and front and rear a/d/s speakers.
As far as I know there has been three owners. The original owner owned it until around 20k miles then sold it to the second owner that had it for about 10 years and sold it to my friend with about 27k miles. My friend has had it a year or two and now it has 36k miles. The owner is not sure if he has the maintenance records for it but I am guessing he doesn't. The paint is not perfect as this car has spent much of its life out of a garage but it is in very good shape for a driver. The drivers seat bolster shows some wear. It has not had a 30k mile service yet so that is due. What does the collective at pelican think she is worth? Pics posted a few posts down. Last edited by pirahna; 03-21-2012 at 04:40 PM.. |

28k-32k depending on condition and whether he can find the records. That means proof of miles as it is concerning the seats and paint are not perfect with such low miles if real.
Seems like these cars have gone up a good bit this year. Two years ago there would be 3 pages of 84-89 911's for sale on ebay now less than one page as these cars go overseas. For comparison this care sold in a week with multiple offers on asking albeit in a rare color but with much higher miles : Excellence :: Cars for Sale : 1985 911 for sale in Tallahassee, FL |

I'm not as optimistic on the price as whiterabbit. It sounds like the car is low mileage, but still just driver quality. Normally, this would be a sub-$20k car, but there might be a small premium for the low miles if the mechanical condition is consistent the mileage and documented. I know that a lot of these cars have been heading back to Europe, but my experience is that the European buyers start to get very picky with Carreras and SC's priced higher than $16k - $17k. To get more than $20k, the car needs to be very special. The other factor that commands a significant premium today is color. In my experience, rare or desirable colors sell quickly and for substantially more than common colors (red, black, silver, white).

Agreed, no question to get the price I mentioned the car has to be spot on in condition with no stories and genuine low miles.

The car doesn't appear to have any stories behind it. It shows very well but just is not quite up to concourse quality yet. But with some minor paint touch ups, a very thorough detail and a redye of the drivers seat bolster I think this car could look excellent.

Bumping this back up. The car never got listed last year and looking to see what the current market would be.

I think the range is roughly the same. Early cars are way up. G50's are up. Turbos are up. I think the 84-86 cars have held pretty steady.
I'd advise him to do a little work and get the car cleaned up and cosmetically up to snuff if he's serious about selling it. Without any records, and the way the car looks now, I think he's going to get a lot of questions about the mileage. No offense, but from the photos provided I'd have a hard time believing the 36k miles. |

Nice looking car, but 36K miles and no records. Does he have the original manual and service booklet? Post some pics of the interior and the drivers seat. Then it will be a lot easier to put a price on it.

Without records showing the low mileage as real, then I wouldn't consider it a low-mile car. This car looks to me like a 100k-mile car, from the photos I see here. OK, so no premium for super-low miles. Paint has flaws that could be professionally addressed. Interior has flaws that could be addressed.
If you can fix up these flaws, I'd call it $22k-24k, and if you can get documentation for the low miles, you can add $2k-3k. As it sits, I wouldn't pay more than about $19-$20k for it. |

To easy to fake the mileage on these cars. New Speedo? Was it unplugged? No history?? Carfax may not tell the story either. An experienced buyer would be able to tell, or a good PPI of course. The color scheme is classic. Ask for $23,500.

As a very actively searching and offer-making buyer in this price range my instinct is that it would fly off the shelf @ 23.5k. Below say 25k you are still dealing with "driver" customers like myself. Even if the millage was two or honestly three times whats shown on the speedo, it sounds like an honest car in a great color combo. I've seen bidding wars and 24h sales on 100k mile cars prices not far from 23.5k. For me the biggest question would be what needs replacement from sitting and lack of use. Wouldn't be a terrible idea to have the car "put back on the road" by a good mechanic and give buyers his phone number to call for an initial consultation, but of course allow their own PPI. Knowing what I do now, if the mech who put the car back on the road gave it an overall green light, I would be inclined to phone in a decent offer.

A legit, ready to drive 36,000 mile coupe -- in good colors and mileage appropriate condition -- is a $30k car.
If it says 36,000 and looks like 100,000 -- with no confirming documents -- it is still probably a $20k car all day long. Frankly, you can tell enough from the pictures to know. Is it straight, tight, and dry, or does it have worn bolsters, tired carpet, leaks, and iffy synchros? It seems to have the tool kit, stickers, and the trunk light works -- all good signs. Original panels? A/C and all electrics work? Unless there is something really wrong with it, $18k will sell in a flash and your friend will be kicking himself for not keeping it (or asking more.)
