993 vs 930
I wonder what would be prevailing opinion:
Say, we have a 1995 993 and 1978 930. Same color, mileage, general shape. 993 is a manual coupe. Lets assume that both can be bought today for the same price. How would these cars compare pricewise in 5 years from now? How about 10 years, maybe 20? I think that 930 will appreciate decisively more then 993. I would like to know how wrong or right may I be. |

I'd say 930.

They'll both go up but the 930 will do better in the long run.

The 930 now, in 5 years and in 10 or 20 years. They only imported 400+ 930's in 1978. The number of 993's dictated by all the variations years will always be desirable never in the same league as the early or even the 80's 930's.
My 78 went to Holland 20 years ago and I still miss it. ![]() |

930 930 930 930! I think the early Porsche turbos are truly the first supercars available to the public and greatly undervalued at this time. You will always (well maybe not always but for years to come) be able to obtain a 993 but not so much with the early 930's. Just look around for a 75 76 77 3.0 and see what you can come up with. Not much even now.

Or the enviromental movement gets some sway and all cars pre-2013 or whatever are no longer licenseable. Then both cars were financial mis-steps.
I love my cars. I hope they go up, but even the classic car market crash of 1991 shows that blue chip "investment" cars can drop dramatically. Who cares, they are toys. I have investments, and I have toys. Having said that, 930 all the way.

Total miles driven by all classic cars in a year are less then one hudredths of one percent of total highway miles driven by all the other vehicles.
Even if each classic car pollutes hundreds of times more then a modern car it is still completely insignificant for environment, I would think. Last year I had a dillema which should I buy: 993 or 930. I bought 930 and I am happy with my decision. The test drives were more enjoyable in 930, that's for sure. I wonder though which one would turn out more fun to own as a non-daily driver in a long run. One thing I know for sure; each time I drive a water pumper it seems to me boring and detaches me from direct driving experience. Like sex using a condom, lets say. |

Which is a more refined and fun to drive car? The 993.
Which is more representative of the raw and ragged roots of the marque? The 930. It isn't really a question that I think is open to debate. The 930 by a long shot. As for the threat of the greens? Coal fired electricity production buries automotive emissions by many times. So does airplane emissions. What cars put out is nothing in the grand scheme if things and the car makers carry way too much power, even with CAFE standards in play. My gasoline powered cars have no chance of being banned in my lifetime. |

Using logic when discussing what may happen as a result of environmental regulations doesn't work either, much of environmental policy is window dressing. I'll fight tooth and nail to keep my old cars safe from the environmentalists.
I certainly don't think the environmental movement will get our cars banned, but I put it there since I don't think banking on investment grade of a car is necessarily a great idea.

Where are you going to drive a Model T or an early Dodge Brothers car? They are still worth a bunch of money. Car people will always be car people and even as the internal combustion engine dies and fades away in the next generation, these cars are going to have significant collector value for decades.

The last air cooled 911's (993) will appreciate more. Once 993's hit their upward curve, it will make owning a 73S a bargain. 993's can be had cheaper right now, but that won't last long... JMHO.

What Six Gun said. The 930 defined the marque in the late 70's and 80's. It was initially a true homologation special. Ten years from now a '76 Turbo Carrera will be worth 3 or 4 times more than a '97 993. The gap might even be bigger than that.
