OG Paint change hurting value on 964 C2
 

To go with my 2.0 lightweight car I'm thinking of getting a DD friendly 964 (great AC in these cars and heat). Ive been looking for a while concentrating on 92-94 models. What I'm seeing are a lot of red cars, some fairly priced around 90 -110k miles +/- 20-25k with history. Of course red is not my preferred color.
The 964's were offered in some great colors I'm wondering how much it would affect the value If i repaint. I was thinking of a pretty good shop that would do a windows out re paint for around $6-8k cash. At the moment the 964 is still to an extent the red headed stepchild and not close to the Carreras sudden surge in pricing.

Colors I'm thinking of are mostly early or mid year colors : Olympic blue, Golden green, beige grey, Mexico Blue, Olive green.

To keep the most value out of a color change (and you'll still lose value vs original color) the whole car must be repainted. Interior door jambs, hinge areas, trunk, engine compartment, etc., you've got to strip nearly the entire car. If you're going to keep the car forever than it shouldn't matter to anyone but you.

Deduct the 6-8K you spend on the repaint from the red 964 you buy!

Keep the color original.

Either spend a little more up front to get a color you like more than red or live with the red. Painting the car is $6-8k you could better spend elsewhere. Won't hurt value much, if at all, but won't add anything at all.

I'm going to dissent somewhat here. A really thorough color change to one of the colors you indicated is going to aid marketability when you sell the car. That's because of the very problem you are dealing with now: red is out of favor.

You should be able to buy a red car for $3-4K under the price of a more desirable color. Say the repaint into Beige Gray (I just did that to a Sepia car -- below, pictured still being put together) costs $8K. Your market value may well move up $3-4K with the color change. Again, the work needs to be excellent. So, there will be a net cost to you to paint that's probably 1/2 or more of the paint cost. But you'll be happier and the (right) next owner will be as well.

Thanks for the answers. If I could find one of the elusive manual 964 C2 in a 'classic' Porsche color believe me I would pull the trigger today. Looking at the numbers of exotic, and paint to sample colors we chose here in the US vs what the Europeans and in particular for some reason the British selected, the opportunities for finding one seem very low.

I will keep looking but at the moment I'm planning on a PPI for one of the red cars. If that works out I can take the time to have the re paint done before summer get unbearable down here.

For low $30s you could buy a lower mileage 993 in a color you like too.

get the repaint quote in writing and use that as a bargaining tool

I think that will only have merit if you find a car with rough paint that is going to need to be tended in the near future. If it is good driver quality paint, I don't think the seller is going to care that you don't like the colour.
