Open Porsches are the stepchildren of the marque and since 1983 can be had for less than their coupe and targa brethren. Speedster excluded, of course. - Matt

In just about every other Marque / Brand Top off means dollars up ....... why not so in 911s ?

depends.. I was just thinking.. that a Cab would be a great buy for "future" use.

What type of 356's dring the most $$? Open ones. Why? because for a relaxed sunday drive, dropping the top makes for a great time. Summer cruises.. parades.. fall trips to the mountains etc.

Targas are next best for that.. coupes the worst... BUT coupes make great "track" cars.. both now and in the future. imho, its the TARGAs that have the toughest time out there in the market.

911s "fame" is built on their racing heritage. Stiffer bodies.. winners for decades.. but no one "wins" in a cab ;)


I think I am becoming a Cab convert as I get older.

Someone tell Hank Watts "The Art of Solo Racing" that no one wins in a Cab.

I like convertibles, but not so much in 911 guise.

Case in point: If I want to CRUISE around on a nice day, I take my old Mustang convertible, because that's what it's built for. If I want to DRIVE, I take the 911, because that's what it's built for.

I dunno, I have a soft spot for a first year, '83 SC Cab. I think this would be a wise investment...in fun that is.

Most cabs are low mileage third cars that tend to be well maintained and garaged..... Unless you are tracking, performance drop off is negligible.....

Based upon 356s these are the cars to purchase as a cab is worth multiples over its coupe counterpart....

Were 356 coupes ever worth more than cabs though? Seems like 911 coupes are pretty much always worth more than the equivalent cab. I can't think of many classic cars that are worth more in coupe form though. Split window vette and gullwing are the only two examples that come to mind.

When I lived in Germany I had a Coupe, now I have a '86 Cab. From my experience for every day driving you can drive a Cab just "as hard" as you can drive a Coupe, but on a nice day enjoy the sun and have the full sound of the engine screaming behind you.

Like the already mentioned split-window vette and gullwing, the fixed-roof versions look better. I could live with a leaky roof targa but to me, it spoils the classic 911 line, which is more about the roofline than anything else. Cabs look terrible with the roof up, and so-so with it down. I'm sure they are great cars, but the best looking car in any range always has the best value. In the 356, that is undoubtedly the speedster. In the 911, that is the coupe.

The amount of people interested in how hard-core a car can be driven is always a small enough minority not to effect the overall values. Whereas the amount of people who are swayed by looks is much greater. Case in point : strange colors. Exactly the same car underneath, but some colors are worth less.

It's about looks, not about body rigidity.

Is a Jag E-Type prettier in convertible form?

I think that is questionable.

Convertibles are a huge price premium, though. And it isn't pure visual aesthetics.

My brother would sell this car, he doesnt use it much anymore. Rebuilt title, rebuilt by me years ago. I would buy it except ive got a GP white 84 Cab in the garage. His car runs much better than mine. Shifts better too. Could use a new top, but its not so bad. Wheels suck, tires old. I think the motor was rebuilt, due to the way it runs and drives, but I have no proof of this. In all good mechanically, needs some love. Ill come up with some photos if anybody is interested.
