I think I found my first Porsche
Hey folks,
I found an 01 for 30k, with 15k miles. Is this a good deal? It's a cabriolet. Do you think that could be a daily driver? Would the maintenance costs be high, do you reckon? Thanks, David |

It isn't a good deal. The mileage is low but 30k buys a really nice 02-04 car.

Better buy an air cooled car right away - that will save you a sale in the near future.

One more recommendation. You might consider posting your question in the 996 section of rennlist too. I like this forum a lot but when it comes to the 996 they are more pessimistic than I think reasonable.
BTW Excellence lists the 99-01 996 in the "Best 20k porsche" section of the 2013-14 buyers guide I just got in the mail. That alone should tell you 30k is high. |

Unless it is immaculate with spotless records and driven 2-3k a year versus being parked for the last 10 it is over priced. The cabs are the cheapest 996. I see them in the teens here in Colorado with 100-125k mi on them. Low mileage doesn't double the price unless the car is absolutely perfect with no stories.

thanks a lot. This is very helpful. it has complete service records, was a two owner car, and seems to have been driven regularly and sparingly.

For a little more than 30k you can get a turbo. Better engine... real super car performance.

I see a lot of $30k turbos need $10-20k of service in the first couple years of ownership. They are more bulletproof but they also get beat on more often. And thry cost more to repair. Don't know how many times I've heard a jaw hit the floor when a guy finds out fixing his gearbox is going to cost him 20% of the purchase price of his "cheap" turbo.
