What's up with Targas??

What is up with the targa market? Seems like they have jumped in price the past few months, especially SCs. Is it an SC thing or are Targas becoming more in demand due to rising coupe prices? This nice 80 targa is selling for 20K. I am bummed because just 3 weeks ago there was an identical one for sale in Jackson Hole for only 14K. Identical down to the seats and color. Beautiful car. I called about the one in Jackson and it sold within 24 hours. What is going on?

Love me some Targas.
Feel claustrophobic in a coupe now.

If EBay completed listings reflect reality, SC's are selling from $8,000-15,000, majority seem to be going for around $12,000.

For years Bruce Anderson said that targas were more valuable than coupes and for years the Pelican Parts enthusiasts have said that he is wrong. I think what you are seeing is that with the more mainstream collectibility of 911s these days that Anderson is right when you go outside of our little fish bowl.

Seems in the last few years anything 964 and older coupe or targa has seen rising prices. On some examples I would also say stupid money.

I sold a 82 Targa 2 years ago that was 100x nicer than the one referred to in the thread for less than 21k. Yes, I prob lost a couple grand, but made it up in a 964 coupe I bought. That 82SC is now in Belgium last listed for $42,000 US dollars.

Targa's are really great cars, especially if you live in a climate where the car can be utilized. They are getting harder to find. Found this one two months after daily scouring of pelican, rennlist, autotrader, craigslist ads. At the time it was one of just 5 Targa's (964) listed in the entire US on craigslist...I searched. This Grand Prix white was the first one I called on.
Paid more than I wanted to, but not too much. Happy Hunting !

I still don't like them. I don't like the lines. I *do* like the visibility from the cockpit.

But I think that the market will continue to consider Targas to be the lesser, as they have historically. Regardless of brief bouts of love interest.

I agree. The roof line of the coupe looks so much better to me. But I put the Targa ahead of the Cab in looks... Still I am hoping that the values of Targas get stronger. They haven't been too strong in the past and as a result I got a couple of 911 Targas cheap that I am restoring. I do love the targa top on my 914 - very nice when you don't have AC and the weather gets warm. I bought a 914 umbrella cover and now keep the top off all summer and just cover the cockpit when I park for an extended period of time.
