'84 Targa - Value

I've got a local guy looking to sell his '84 Targa - great overall shape w/ 80k miles, seats and targa top need to be redone (otherwise 100% complete and nice), working A/C. I will try to snap some photos of it soon.

What is a car like this worth?

I am admittedly no expert on values, but I spend a lot of time here looking.
I have an 83 targa that I think is worth close to $18000 +\-

It seems the 3.2 might bring a little more
Hope that helps

$18K or better is a good estimate. The low miles add a lot. However, the seats and top are going to be quite expensive to do to a high standard.

One question: why would such a low mileage car have seats needing to be redone? You might take a look at a CarFax or other report to see if the seller-reported mileage is accurate.

Cheap in the current market so ask yourself why, and carfully scrutinize the maintenance history. In my experience 80k is valve guide time. However at the price there is enough there for a basic top end without falling downthe slippery slope. Obviously options / OG paint / color / sports seats / Fuchs sizing etc affect value.

Ummm... the OP never listed an asking price from the seller, he just asked what the car's worth. All the factors you listed affect value, but to be clear, the $18K number was thrown out there by posters here. As far as I'm aware it's not the "asking price".

Cheers

I think the market may be telling you yours is not an 18K car. Its been posted for over a month and still on the market.

Thanks for all of the responses! Please see link below with a better description of the car a video of it idling.

Also, the seller is asking $9k for the car as it sits. Not sure if he is willing to negotiate either.

$9k for a complete Carrera is a "part out" price.

If all the panels are bent & rusty, electricals fried, and the interior completely flooded out and ruined, it might not be worth it. But even with big issues and a salvage title the car is probably worth $9k in parts.

Assuming you have the money and the time/patience to deal with it, you can't really go wrong, and I would snap it up. It looks like a nice color, and that is a plus.

New leather seat covers can be had for $1200 a set, plus installation. Count on $1-2k to redo the Targa Top, depending on its needs. Condition of the synchros in the 915 trans are another factor that could be costly, but not a deal breaker at $9k!

The engine idle issue is probably a matter of careful troubleshooting -- the challenge with these cars is isolating the fault in a system with no onboard diagnostics. The fix may well only be a couple of 100 dollars. But it may require a lot more to figure it out, especially if you are paying a mechanic. A lot of people (including workshops) throw money at the problem by replacing costly parts until something "fixes it". Examples:

Fuel pressure regulator
bad fuel injector(s) (can often be rebuilt reasonably)
AFM
etc.

A good shop should be able to sort it for $1000. More in a bad shop that will guess & swap.

If the only major issues are the idle, interior, and top, Flippers would be salivating at $9k. With a little sweat equity and $4-5k to sort that stuff, it may well sell for ~$18k or more, which is the market for driver quality 915 Targas.

Or keep yourself a car you bought at a great price.
