What does "refreshed" mean to you?

I'm interested in what it means to you when a seller says a motor has been "refreshed". Obviously, experienced buyers would ask. But what is your first impression when you see a car advertised as the engine having been "refreshed"?

doesn't mean a damn thing to me.

I want to hear what was done. Rings? Pistons? Main bearings? Valves? Refreshed could mean anything and that usually means nothing.

It's not specific enough. Could mean a reseal, a top end rebuild, or just replacing hoses and wires.

If doesn't say something along the lines of "top end overhaul" or "complete overhaul" or "rebuilt" with paperwork - it doesn't mean anything.

Refreshed what??

To me, "refreshed" equates a "tune up"...nothing more.

unless it comes with receipts from a shop I trust, it means I'm looking at the next car on the list

"refreshed" = generic sales term.

I was looking at a car for sale just a few weeks ago(maybe the same one) that had a "recent engine out refresh". I was thinking a top end rebuild-Sounds good doesn't it. I called the shop that did the work and found that they simply fixed an oil leak. The car also had the "transmission refreshed" and found that they fixed a leak and changed the fluid. My lesson learned here is don't assume anything, get the facts.

Refresh obviously means different things to different people so asking the person saying it is the answer.
but for me it means a reseal of the engine and rings and valve grind and maybe guides, and a new timing drive if overhead cam.

I'd say refreshed means an oil change, cap, rotor, possibly CIS seals/o-rings, the triangle, belt, valve adjustment - that's about it.

I agree with CountD Tune up of easy things to do and possible shampoo. When you refresh your computer screen it is a quick update of the screen being reviewed. Not a rebuild of the harddrive. Thanks ROB
