Local advice on 912 purchase...

Not sure if I posted this in the right place, but here goes...

I have been looking high and low for a less than perfect 912 that my son and I could wrench on and restore. I'm a decent wrench, but extensive body work is way outta my league and seems VERY expensive. So, I was checking out Beverly Hills Car Club. They have a few candidates, but I don't know anything about them. Anyone ever worked with them?

Anyone know of a local shop in their area that could do a PPI? They are located just west of Cal State LA, off the 10

Anything in particular I should be looking for?

Thank you!

There is always something oddly wrong with their cars, you just have to find out what it is and see if you can live with it. Most are projects from the east coast. You have no chance buying from them or most other people if you need a PPI on a low price project car. All that said i bought one of my best and favorite cars from them but it took two years of checking their site daily. GL

Their prices seem a little off. But that is only my 2 cents by simply viewing the photos, never been there in person.

They buy every beat project car from here to Timbuktu and hoard them in warehouses and sell them off at high prices to people who don't know what it costs to put one of these cars right. You are much better off looking in the for sale section here, on Craigs, on eBay - on eBay the cars come up. Don't bother...

There's a guy up in Sheridan Wyoming who sells project cars. They are generally advertised in Montana and Colorado on CL or on Samba. Well maybe "sells" is overstating it. He offers many for sale.

Okay...

Mixed reviews on the guys it seems. They have been good about sending detailed pics and one of their guys called me today; seemed nice enough and answered my questions.

This car looks solid on the outside, needs work inside, and probably some engine/trans work. He says it runs and drives. I'm okay with interior and some engine work... Rust and big body projects worry me...no skills there

I have been there a couple times -- once to pPPI a car for a Brit. BHCC had failed to tell him the car had been in a storm surge (Sandy) and there was so much silt in the door and ignition keyways you couldn't get a key in. There were water level lines across the gauges -- on the back of the glass.

CountD is correct: they just buy everything. They have a warehouse down the street filled with all the 'mistakes' they've made. E.g., cars they couldn't sell.

I have seen some okay cars there, but be sure to get an independent pair of eyes on whatever you're considering. They have salesmen there, not Porsche experts.

That looks like a good one! Could paint the whole thing any one of eight colours and still say it's the original colour ;-)

I spoke with them a couple of times yet never felt like I had a firm answer on the description and/or history of the cars I was interested. I choose to keep an eye here, Samba & CL, finally after a few months and a couple of PPI's later I just picked up a 912E from CL in Miami(I am in Nashville).
Spoke with a lot of great people and a lot of jerks, however I found that being vigilant yet cautious was the key.

Don't buy without a PPI.

I don't get it on that Samba car, what's the point of the speedo/odo picture? Is one supposed to believe the car has 15 miles?
