1982 & 1991 911 - Cars.com - Hot Market Spurs Fraudsters
Not sure if anyone else has seen this yet. You know the market is out of control when the Kenyan Cyber Cafes (or some other fraud ring) has started listing 911's on cars.com.
I came across a 1982 Coupe advertised on cars.com. Asking price $3,800 or so. I figured the price was a typo, $23,800 or so, so I wrote the seller about the price, mileage, etc. Here is what came back: Lt. Steven Walker steven.walker7a7@gmail.com Feb 27 (2 days ago) "I have my 1982 Porsche 911 SC for sale.I bought it when I was serving in Beale AFB, CA but I was promoted and transferred to Hickam AFB, HI for a 3 years period, so i do not want to let it ruin in my backyard therefore i need a fast and reliable buyer. The car is already at the Logistic Department in Beale AFB, CA crated and ready to go. The shipping will be free for you because I will transport it using the Internal Logistic Department. The financial part will be managed by Google Wallet, which means you will have a 7 days inspection period before committing to buy the car. In this way both, buyer and seller are 100% covered during the steps of this transaction. Only after your inspection you can decide if you want to buy it or not. If you agree with my price $4000 and if you are interested to conclude this purchase in a timely manner email me your: Full name and shipping address, so I can inform Google Wallet that I might have a buyer. I will forward your details to them and then you will receive the invoice with all terms and payment details. I can set the transaction for only $2000 deposit to Google Wallet. I wrote Lt. Walker back, thanked him for his service and told him his car was underpriced. I offered to come see the car and would make him a fairer (ie: higher) price if I liked the car. I received a response that pretty much the same as before, car was boxed, send the money and I can see the car. Now don't get me wrong, I'd buy a great condition lower priced 1982 911 in this market in a heart beat, but come on! Seriously, who would fall for this. What makes it even worse is that they are using our military men as the guise. I reported the seller to Cars.com. Unfortunately, now Cars.com has 1991 Red 964, private seller, for $4,061. I wrote that seller and got a similar response. I guess this type of stuff was inevitable given the current air cooled market. Buyer beware.

A couple more for sale on cars.com, under $5k vehicles, selling by individuals "Ross" and "Devlan". No phone or email contact info provided.
The 1982 I know I have seen before on Pelican. I think it was priced around $30k and was part of a 3 car listing if my memory serves. Anyone recognize the cars? ![]()

Many years ago, I would see this nonsense all the time on eBay - a $25,000 Ducati superbike for $7K "buy it now", $12K Ducati Monsters for $3000, and so forth. I actually know someone who fell for this, sent a Western Union wire transfer for the sale amount, thought better of it an hour or so later, went back to the WU office and was able to get his money back, minus a sizeable fee from them, since the funds had not been collected yet!

The same with trying to find parts. Even on this forum under wanted 911 parts I constantly get scam emails. I was looking for Fuchs, so the scammers just finds pictures to send me.
But it's a scam whenever they are willing to pay shipping, want paid using Western Union or Money Gram and will not use PayPal. Seen this a lot on eBay too, some of the listing are true scams or hacked into eBay. |
