996 is a massive bargain...

Yes, water cooled, not a true 911, and ugly, but wow, these are cheap cars.
$16k for 55k miles
$19k for 78k miles

What is the cost of fixing the IMS/RMS problem?

Are all 996's priced in this range?
Or are these example super cheap, even for 996 standards?

I thought about buying a 996 recently - a very clean 2000 Cabrio popped up locally for $16K. For that price, you could do the IMSB, RMS, AOS, clutch and still be around $20K. However, I spent a couple days reading the Rennlist 996 threads (there's an active 996 community over there) and all of Jack Raby's posts. Needless to say I came away with the crap scared out of me. The IMSB/RMS are only a couple of the issues. Jack Raby's facebook page detailed some of the more major issues that his company has seen.

Although I'm looking for a nice 3.2 or SC, the 996 made a lot of sense for me with a small family. 996s have functional A/C, are relatively fast, and are a bit more "developed" than the earlier air-cooled cars. However, I'm hesitant to get near one with the potential issues outlined by Jack and others. I'd suggested reading up on them.

It's been discussed already...
Right here in Marketplace:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-marketplace-discussion/796651-because-scs-skyrocketing-996s-worth-another-look.html

and in the 996 forum:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-996-997-forum/744063-996-prices-bottomed-out.html
And I disagree with your premise. The 996 is every bit a 911. If you had ever driven one you would know that.

2cam, do you have a link to Jack's posts?
I'd like to do some reading on the 996 issues.

It's Jake Raby and he's really easy to find if you google. And if you clicked the link I listed you would learn a lot about the 996's issues.

Great idea. Here ya go:

Pre-failure Directives

Happy trails. I think a newer car is probably what you are really looking for anyway.

My perspective is that perhaps a nugget of knowledge will fall out of each discussion that can increase my understanding of the cars and the market. I know that PML has been annoying the crap out of people here on the forum with the repetitive, unproductive posts, but what seems even less productive are the personal attacks, bashing, name calling, etc.

I've only been an official member for a month, but have found Pelican to be a great forum and resource with a TON of useful information for new Porsche owners. It's sad to see some of the animosity and vitriol shown in a number of these posts. It really takes away from the positive energy of the community that I've seen so far.

What's the old saying? " If you can't say anything nice, ......."? Perhaps something to think about.

Well said. This thread is to discuss 996's.
IfF you don't like them, or my questions, then go read another thread.

Not sure why that's so hard for Pelican trolls like Silber to do.
Go away. I thought you put me on ignore.

I have a 996. People mock me wherever I go. I am embarrassed to drive it. Every time I turn the key, it's like playing Russian Roulette. Oh well. It was cheaper than buying a SmartForTwo.

That's funny! I drove Alfa GTV6s and Milanos for a number of years and always felt the same way. It was only a matter of time before a timing belt would let go and send valves crashing into pistons. But DAMN they were fun to drive and sounded great!

Ha. I have an '06 Boxster and 3 air cooled 911s. People who get all hysterical about the water cooled cars' "failings" are amusing to me.

EDIT:
Oh, and for the OP? I think he chose the wrong user name. I think it should be "PushingMyAgenda."

methinks he was being facetious, and 2cam thought he was being literal.

As for the technical problems of the 996 cars, I intend no dispersions on Jack Raby's expertise or experience -- which is extensive. But he has a business selling IMS conversions and other engineering fixes.

Preventive maintenance is good practice in any car -- especially a Porsche. And I think the hysteria surrounding Boxsters and 996s is a little over the top. Companies selling the fixes are not creating that hysteria -- owners and scared would-be buyers are. But those making money from the fixes have no incentive to tamp it down, either.
