911 SC, What's it worth?
I have a 1980 911 SC coupe that I have been working on for the last 15-16 years. It has recently had a bare metal, all apart paint job back to it's original color which is black metallic. New synchros in the gearbox, lightweight RS type interior with Corbeau seats and harnesses, new windshield, all new rubber on the glass and doors, etc. At the moment, I have it insured for $23k with one of the classic/antique insurance companies. I have just finished rebuilding the engine, turning it into a 3.3SS w/Carrera large port heads, twin plug ignition, Mahle 10:1 pistons, LN cylinders, 964 cams, etc. Cost of the rebuild was about $12k in parts and labor. I believe that I need to increase the insurance level, but to what? If I add the cost of the engine work, that would bump the insurance up to $35k. I don't want to upset the insurance company by trying to buy too much value, but on the other hand, I would like to have as much coverage as possible. The chassis has about 140k miles on it, the engine less than a thousand miles.

911scs have been climbing in value very quickly of late. As such getting your insurance to increase shouldn't be too hard though $35k might be a stretch. Mods don't really add value. I know they add replacement cost but what you can sell that car for is nowhere near $35k.

I'm an sc fan and owner of a similar vehicle to what you described. Your $35k for"insurance" value is probably correct, perhaps a tad high. Try to replicate it for that, with confidence... Hard to do. Selling it is another matter all together.
Plus, these cars are going up in value at crazy rates.

You are probably throwing money at your insurance company, no offence. I also spent many many hours and much money on my last SC. Didnt make it a 100K car, though.
And I guess your paint shop forgot to remove the engine lid catch during the "bare metal, all apart" paint job. I would complain about that. |
