5500 miles 911E

ANyone See the Chasing Classic cars late night season finale.

Wayne steals a 5500 miles one owner 70 911E targa from a little old lady
and literally runs out the door laughing and drives it down the street and sells it for
150K + talk about the f *** word gadzooks .
i really felt bad for that old women ..
i really doubt she saw 6 figures for her father 70E ...

Huh?

That what he does ( I chase the cars, I buy them and then I sell them.) We are never told what he pays for them, but there are lots of reasons people may not want to sell on their own and are willing to take less than "top" dollar to avoid the hassle of it all. I think he treats most sellers with respect and it is not like they don't know what he is buying the car for.

I'd be interested in knowing what he paid her.

But my gut says he pays a lot better than the average dealer. the fact he is a public figure makes him more accountable -- and his business model relies upon a degree of trust from those he is buying from.

I don't know anything about him other that derived from watching his show -- maybe he is a shyster. But if he is, displaying that publicly is a huge risk. Part of his living is derived from coaxing cars out of the garages and barns of long time owners -- many of whom have mixed feelings about selling. It wouldn't take much really negative publicity to undermine his business.

If word got out he screwed the old lady and those like her, his access would be badly affected -- and his show & notoriety make him much more vulnerable to a big public stink.

His reputation is much valuable than a one time gain/loss on a car.

Carini's show isn't the only one. Storage Wars is literally about opportunists making money off peoples' misfortunes. But hey, we all love scoundrels (Star Wars reference).

I'm sure the facts will get out. People on production crews talk.

...and on the same episode he lost money on the Stutz. And I don't feel bad for Wayne! I think he sold all three at no reserve? So he shoulders some risk. I doubt the old lady wanted to prep the car, haul it to an auction and everything that entails.

If he bought it for say 40K by telling the lady that was all it was worth and being deceptive about where the 911 market is right now, that would be sleazy, but I echo what COLB says. I am sure at this point he makes more on the show that he does on the cars and he can afford to pay a fair price to sellers. (its all about the story(s) for the show now!)

I watched one episode where Carini inspected this old dude's Miura S -- that has been stored in a garage for decades -- completely stock and intact. Though no doubt deteriorating.

Guy would not sell, though. Carini indicated he would keep in touch over time, and maybe he would eventually let it go (or his heirs more like it).

A one owner, "found" Miura S is worth a mint of money. Deals like that will evaporate if he gets a reputation for abusing the unaware.

A similar situatuation -- I watch the American Pickers show on History(?) -- and they will frequently offer a lot more than they have to on a piece when they know it is worth way more than the owner is asking -- maybe because they are stand-up guys. But no doubt they appreciate that once the show airs, they will be subject to major criticism if they are perceived as swindling gramps.

I didn't watch the whole episode, so I didn't see the sale price - wow.

Anyway, she wasn't that old and was mentally together and the house was upscale. I'd venture to say she is not a novice when it comes to financial decisions.

I'm OK with flipping if the flipper adds value. For the most part, it appears that Wayne Carini adds value more often than not in the situations depicted on the show.

Reality check...

I've always thought that Wayne isn't actually showing up and filming the real negotiation... what's shown is a produced segment where he's pretending not to know the outcome of the negotiation.

I imagine Wayne, the lady, and the producers agreed to terms far prior to the filming of the episode. In filming the 'story' it made Wayne look as if he bought and flipped the car...

Eww, sausage is pigs lips!

This is how it's done. As recently revealed by a Storage Wars participant, the producers put some "good *****" in the lockers to spice up the show -- and to know where and when to have the cameras rolling.

The 'cliffhanger' segments are mostly shot after the results are all in.

There's very little 'reality' in reality TV. But it can be addictive anyway.

No doubt a lot of it is staged. But I think Storage Wars is one of the worst -- and there was public disclosure about how it is basically fabricated.

The only car show that is as bad is Classic Car Rescue. They aren't just hamming it up to make it more interesting -- that show is outright farce -- they script the conflict, and even the mid-restoration "disasters" are sometimes faked. I watched the dude drop the windshield on a car they were restoring, and you could see that the windshield he "dropped" wasn't the same one that they had taken off the car just moments before. Fake drama. And the silly two week deadline before the celebrity car appraiser shows up is ridiculous.

Wheeler Dealers is my favorite -- even though the buying & selling is somewhat dubious, and the "profit" they claim excludes the 100s of hours poor Ed puts into every car, it is an interesting show without all the fake drama. For an amateur mechanic like me, there is actually some useful knowledge on display.

Watching him try to drive the Lotus Elan they restored was hilarious. His knees were up to his ears. He could wear that car as an overcoat.

I guess -- to a point -- a car is a car, and he has plenty of off camera time to figure them out before filming. But it is still pretty impressive for someone to be able to work with confidence on such a wide variety of marques.

I inspected the 1970 911E in person in Scottsdale at RM. This forum is full of smart car people, so I will leave the photo to do the talking. Here is the drivers side floor mat in this "5k original miles" car...

Actually, the opposite is true. In fact, the plaintiff's claims were found to be so outlandish by the judge that he was ordered to pay A&E's legal fees of $122,000.

I didn't know the guy lost. But reading the story, it sounds more complicated. he lost his wrongful termination suit, but that doesn't mean the show doesn't involve a lot of staging. At least that is inferred in this article:

‘Storage Wars’ Lawsuit Update: Star Dave Hester Refuses To Pay $122K To A&E After Losing Court Case
