Ex Magnus Walker car on the Samba

Certainly some very nice desirable parts on this car but for the price I'd want to build my own hot rod. Its interesting that the name is the selling point even though the cars moved on considerably from where Magnus Walker originally took it to.

From the sound of it, I don't know that it would qualify as an "ex-magnus" car. Sounds like the guy found the car on Pelican, had Magnus pick it up and do a bunch of work to it... then it was subsequently wrecked and repaired again... More like Magnus customer car #1 perhaps?

Would be more desirable (and more ex-Magnus) if it was one that he personally owned for a while and modified for himself~

Not an Ex-Magnus car in my book. That would be like calling a '67S that original sold at Carlsen in Palo Alto and was then traded in at Vasek's in 1976, an Ex-Vasek car. Car passed through Walker's garage and got a little tending to. But it's not a Walker built car.

Just to clear up any confusion, Magnus does not work on cars.

If people haven't figured that out they aren't paying attention. He fiddles with bits and pieces on them but brakes, suspension, engines, gearboxes, body, paint, interior are all contracted out. There's an army of subs.

Magnus "built" cars are kind of like a Singer.

I have a better analogy on this car for sale. You often see cars with Ruf Soeedlines and a body kit called Ruf vehicles. A Ruf vehicle has a Ruf vin. A car Ruf's US distributor strapped a bunch of Ruf parts onto isnt a Ruf build.

Magnus is like an architect. He comes up with an idea for a design. He doesn't pour the concrete. I have no expectation that he should. While I tune every LSD that leaves my workshop it would be ridiculous to expect me to cut every gear or turn every LSD body. I've got more than a dozen guys who actually make what I sell. Neither myself nor Nagnus has ever pretended anything else.

Being that I know both Ruf and Magnus, (plus Rob Dickenson), I don't need the schooling.

Why would it be more valuable because it was driven by a semi famous hipster? The car looks sort of cool, but it is still just a pimped up bits and pieces car.

Personally I dont understand the hype around that guy.

At that price I would take a nice 965 or a 993TT any time.

Well, he is a famous Porsche collector who is very dedicated to the hobby, plus he's a nice guy. I can understand if he might not be your cup of tea but what he's done with his life and the cool stuff he's acquired is kind of impressive. He started with nothing, or very little, from my understanding and where he is now in life is amazing. The Porsche collection is just one aspect, (and it's the only one he shares), but trust me, the guy is something else.

I think there's something in human nature where people like to bag on popular people. I suspect it's a bit of jealousy. Magnus is the real deal. He loves these cars just like we do. And he's a brilliant businessman as well. Lastly, having spent some time hanging out with him I will also say he's down to earth and just one of the guys. No attitude or airs.He's got his own style and maybe that's not for you, but if you think he's a hipster you don't know what a hipster is.

I agree. I think he has sort of become "the face" of the vintage Porsche community, particularly the modified early car community, whether we like it or not and that clearly upsets a few. I certainly can see why some of those that toil away in their garages to modify their creations get jealous when they see someone else farming the work out and taking the accolades for doing what they have already done with their own blood, sweat, and hard earned coin.

For what it's worth, I love the look of his cars as he has managed to toe a line between edgy and tacky which is difficult to do and he clearly has an eye for design.

This post also reminds me that I need to get to paying someone to install all of the cool suspension parts I bought last year so I can do the mild "hot rodding" I originally intended when I bought my toy.

Maybe you have to meet the guy.....I never have. Probably never will. I am kind of narrow minded as most of you know.

Not being from the west coast, I only know him from the forum and, of course, his film. I however enjoy lurking in his thread and enjoyed the film.

He was the founder of a clothing line called Serious, most famous for being worn by the likes of Slash and other rock stars and movie stars. That was back in the late 90s. Did well for himself. His Urban Outlaw line of clothing could be called the rebirth of Serious. Been a POC driver/racer almost as long.

Yeah, but I would have thought more bonafied Porsche provanance required in order for the classic Porsche crowd to acknowledge actual added value to a car.
A classic 911 is a different proposition than an Apple gadget after all (I would think)

In my mind, ex Porsche racing drivers, Hollywood racing drivers (Dean, McQueen, Newman) and significant Porsche family members qualify.......
......Not Seinfelds, Lenos and Walkers.

They are well known nice guys and true enthusiasts, but that just does not "make the cut" in my world.

You will actually have to convince the next owner that your "previously owned by some cool Youtube Porsche guy 911" has real value added to it.......or you will have paid way too much for those nice louvers and stuff.
