To put things in perspective a 94 turbo cost $105k on average in 1994 a GTS around $85k the 94 turbo is worth between $105 and $295K now depending on condition, color, records etc. A GTS auto is worth between $29k and $95k while the 5 speeds are worth between $35k and $105k depending on mileage color condition etc. Maintenance costs is strictly proportional to how well either was maintained. Both will hold up well if maintained properly and both can cost through the nose if not. I can assure you the turbo is in general and easier car to work on.

I believe most of the negative hype surrounding the 928 is unjustified. If I took the boards / reviews seriously I never would have bought my 964... but due to the negative publicity I got a great deal for a great all round car! Today 964 prices are on the rise and most of the naysayers are gone or have been converted.

The 928 is an excellent Porsche ... its not a 911 ... but best in its class. Even today it looks great and is a blast on the highway. You can cruise all day at 100mph+ with confidence and comfort. The fact you can buy a well sorted one in the $10-$15k range is a gift in IMO.

Hey... someone resurrect this thread a few years from now and prove me right :)

I think that was spot on. Good evaluation of how things stand. Reliability is directly related to how well it was maintained and more times than not a used car has issues and reputation from poor quality shade tree mechanics who really know less than they think trying to jury rig the car to work on a dimes budget.

Now can we get back to speculating on 928 values?

I am already seeing an increase in the 928 market. However it is a slow start and only select pristine cars are commanding premiums. I saw an 89 S4 with 11k miles the other day someone turned down $40k for and it was a gem.

I have been offered $45k for my GTS and no way would i let it go for that little. They are no 911 but I didn't buy it to be one either. They are fantastic driving cars with a unique feel. At one time I owned a 944S2, 964 C2, 965 and 928GTS. Driving them back to back they couldn't be more different. Each are uniquely genuine driving experiences unlike any other Marque.

The reason why values are increasing is that as cars become more computerized and offer less interactive experience people are buying these as weekend toys not to drive fast as much to just have a fun drive. The exotics today are pricey expensive and IMO a bore to drive unless you are doing 150mph. You can have as much fun in a 964 at 30mph as you can at 130 and when set up properly can be a blast on the track. Same goes for the 944 and 928.

Being realistic, I think it is harder to find a clean, correct, well-sorted 928 than it is to find a 356 in the same manner (money aside). I have looked at myriad 928s over a 10 year period and only saw ONE I would buy, and this one was nice. There are so many ragged ones in SoCal that it made me sad.
