Opinion on buying temp pcar.

I have been looking for about a year for the perfect 75-89 coupe. Ive passed on a few very nice cars waiting for the right car. Ive consider buying another newer summer car, but decided its not for me. Im waiting to hear back from a friend about buying his very original but high mileage 84 coupe. I think he has decided to keep it. Its been two weeks and no answer. I know of a very clean, but very modded 76 coupe. Thinking of just buying it and keeping it till I make the way I want it or flip for another car. The car has 930 fender flaires front and rear. Its was done very nice. The issuse is he updated it to 964 bumpers, 993 mirrors, 3.2 swap with unknown history. Im not a fan of the bumpers or an engine with unknown history. On a positive note the body work and paint is show quality. Would this be hard to unload for 18-20k quick if I find the perfect car and need to move quick. Also considered just getting more period correct bumpers and back dating it. Opinions wanted. Thanks.

In my experience, Frankenstein cars, even really good Frankenstein cars, are always harder to sell. If I was looking for a temporary car that, worst case scenario, I might have to unload quickly, I probably wouldn't consider a car like this.

I was wondering with back dated rsr iroc bumpers if this would be a desirable car. The flares were done in all steel. I like the current look and could live with the car, but really would perfer iroc bumpers over the 964 bumpers.

There is a 76 in DC on Craigslist that sounds very similar to the car you are describing. It was for sale for months at 18k.

It was a 993 body mod. I think these cars sell really slow unless you are almost giving it away.

Would most people stay awat because of the flaires or others reasons? Seems many people doing rs mods flaire their cars. Swaping the 2.7 for a 3.2 seems common as well. I am concerned with the resale risk, but also think it could be a cool hotrod build.

Someone here gave me good advice. They said I was looking for a marriage. You are also. It's good to find the perfect car, but you seem to be losing patience. Yes, anything you buy can be sold within a few weeks, if priced correctly, so this should take some pressure off in finding the perfect car.

Im trying not to rush, but sold my weekend car over a year ago. Now I only have my company car to drive. Its a nice car but ita wrapped in company logos. Not my choice but its free gas. Ive seen soo many nice cars over the past year. They are either not for sale or way over market price. Im just a regular guy with normal job. Dont have 50k for low mileage perfect car. I can do some work myself. Im an auto body appraiser and this is why I keep running into nice cars not for sale. Theres a bunch of indy shops in my area.

If you are price conscious, and the conversion is well done, a 76 with a 3.2 could be a really nice car for a weekend driver. Given your expertise, I would trust you can tell when work is done properly or not. But it is going to have a pretty low value ceiling.

The issue is not necessarily in the ownership experience, but in the desire to turn the car over quickly if you find the "right" car you seem to be looking for -- unless you can afford to own both for a while.

With the market as it is, you need to be able to act quickly if you find exactly what you want -- and it isn't going to wait for you to unload a pretty significantly modified mid-year.

But if you like the car, it runs well, and you can get it cheap -- it is worth considering.

For the right car low to mid 20s. The car in RI was on my list bc I can do the body work and prep, but would pay a shop to do the paint. I tried painting and wouldnt even attempt it on a car like this. I would want someone to do it right. I missed out on a few cars while trying to sell mt mkv gti w/o giving it away. Thinking if I buy a temp car it may happen again. If I got the modded 76 I would buy an iroc front bumper to make it look more period correct. The rear 964 cover is close enough for me. My wife wants me to just buy something. Almost grabbed a 65 mustang but my father bought it. I was helping him find a fun weekend/show car. I told him if he didnt buy it I was. He bought it. It needed to be finished. Got it back on road and he won at first car show he attended.

The 76 would be in the teens. Paint and body work is very very good.

If your budget is low to mid 20s, I'd just get the car you want.
If you're willing to expand your search radius.

If someone were giving me advice on buying a Porsche, I would tend to give little weight to someone who has never owned or even had a proper drive in one.

But that is just me.

That's not an unreasonable point.

That's the right plan 99% of the time, for anything in life.
It's not rocket surgery.

May have found a nice 80s coupe. Looking like it may be a bidding war. I will see, drive inspect and hopefully make an offer on Saturday. Hope this is the one.
