You can't buy happiness, but you can buy car parts which is kind of the same thing.

993 vs 996

as an owner of both, my 996 is my dd and i enjoy it very much. while it may not look as nice as the 993, both are fine cars if maintained and cared for properly. perhaps the op sold his 993 (for a fair amount of money i presume) to get into a well-sorted, low mile 996 with money left over. i'd consider that if i were in his situation too.

after all, we all buy cars to drive so let's all enjoy our rides and drive. to each his own. perhaps the op has earned his opinion through experience.

Hey ray, no disrespect to your 996, but I don't think I've ever seen the front of one in a photo. I've heard rumors that they're really shy. Only a$$ shots.

There is a guy that knows nothing about 911's and likes to advertise it. Gen 1 watercooled 996's are so easy and cheap to find, its a wonder why he advertises???

1999-2001 911(996).... I do not recommend those to my enemies, and I slap my friends that try to buy one... pure crap... imho of course... Sad day when Porsche stopped racing what they sold their public.

The only ones that you can pull from that bunch are the 996 TT and only because their internals date back to the stuff used in race cars.... I had a 2002 TTurbo. Loved how the car drove, crazy fast, but the interior quality was soooo poor. And this was with the upgraded interior that the turbo comes with... mostly leather. T

I did a few upgrades to the interior...but just could not sit in the car and enjoy the view enough to make me keep it... (I think that would be different with the newer cars...)

If I ever entertain buying a newer car it will have to be something from 2009+ when the issue of IMS was finally addressed with the different engine (if NA)... As far as getting a TTurbo, love the newer cars with the round headlights again and the much improve (both in looks and quality) of the interior so anything 2006+ for TT would be great.

Right now I am having too much fun working on getting the old ones I have, back on the road...

I've driven my friends 996 and it was a blast to drive. However, I also love driving my '74 "air cooled" and I would never put down someone else's Porsche. On our monthly PCA road trips thru the California mountains, I am constantly explaining to some of my friends that "it's just light and only has 200 hp (if that)" but they never believe me

996TT's, 997TT's and GT2's through 2008 and all 996 and 997 GT3's came with versions of the Hans Mezger-designed GT1 engine which is a totally different (more robust) animal than the M96, M97 and 9A1 engines.

The 2014 911 RSR's built for the IMSA/Tudor and the FIA World Endurance Championship series series have the Mezger powerplant.

Evidently the 9A1 engine isn't ready for competition use yet.

There's a reason why the resale value on the 996 is so low...

Maybe he's just sour grapes?

Exactly...

Wife looks at me funny when she goes out to the garage and sees me on the floor looking up at the engine like I was looking up a woman skirt... I love looking at it and thinking about the engineering efforts that went into it...

I understand that the newer cases no longer have the 964 part number.... but they are the same case with a few more modifications...

A watercooled snob. Never thought I'd see that.

I have met a few aircooled snobs, but never a watercooled.

I've owned both air cooled and water cooled. I love them both. The 84 3.2 was a fun car, but less practical for me. The 99 3.4 car is a great daily driver. I've put 8,000 miles on the 996 in the last 6 months of ownership, and it has 130,000 miles. I can certainly see the allure of the air cooled car, but for me the 996 makes more sense from a comfortable daily driver. Also, always worth repeating is that in 1999 the 996 was the lightest and fastest 911 made to date. Nothing to turn a nose up to me in that. As always, everyone has an opinion and it's funny to see that guy showing his water cooled snobbery.

I own a couple of each spanning 35+ years .
All good at what they do , yet fail in areas that others excel .

I'm not so blinkered though .
Or opinionated ......

I loved my 05 Boxster S. I just got tired of the depreciation, and didn't want to drop the extra coin on the IMS work -- so I sold it before the CPO warranty ran out.

Awesome car to drive, though. And other than replacing the carbon canister under warranty, never had an issue with it.

I am very upset about this. My 85 has only gone 29 years. ........Without a trans or engine rebuild. Just pure junk. What was I thinking?

some don't like the way the look. i beg to differ. i especially like the mk1 aero kit. here's a front photo of one from piston heads. i just need the front bumper and taco wing.

the 996 is not too expensive to drive on a daily basis. to each his own.

It's an amusing ad because the car he wants is about 1/2 the price of the 'unreliable crap' he derides. And most air-cooled Porsche owners know that, so he's really talking to himself.

IMO, the IMS brouhaha is overblown, but if there was every anyone who I would take *a small amount of pleasure* in hearing of a failure, it would be this guy. Schadenfreude.
