2 out of 3 on early porsche 912 ???

I am looking at an early porsche 912 that has matching chassis and engine, but a non matching transmission. I plan to use it as a summer weekend driver, then tear it down for a restoration at some point in the next 5 years. I know how to value the car for the current use (it doesn't matter to me that its 2 of 3) but I wonder how much the 2/3 would make the restoration foolish if I choose to later sell the car.
Any thoughts would be appreciated. thanks

Are you sure the gearbox isn't original? Back then many numbers weren't recorded.

Well give you an idea unless the car has rare options, ie. targa or just loaded up like a 911 it will never bring top dollar... that being said 912's are bringing pretty good money these days, but depending on how bad the car is it will likely be a wash value wise for you as they still cost the same as 911's to restore but top dollar is only about about 20% of the value of the 911's.

Missing that tranny does hurt, but mostly only if it is restored to a high end level, but the next guy will surely make a big deal out of it just to get a better deal on it~

Good luck and welcome to the Pelican forums!

I think 20% is a little pessimistic. 912s seem to be bringing closer to 40-50% of 911 (non-S or E) values for same year in similar condition.

But the overall thought is right. Restorations are almost never break even propositions, but 912s have similar costs but a lower return on investment than 911s.

Depends on the year. SWB 912s bring a bit more than '69s. Regardless if the car is driver condition it's worth restoring and enjoying along the way. That's what I'm doing with my '67. I think people are going to be really surprised what a 912 is worth in 5 years.

Yeah definitely the 912's are undervalued as they are almost identical to the 911's... I've seen some in the $70-$80K asking range lately... crazy~

If you go apples to apples, year for year for similar condition cars i'd like to see a 912 bring 50% of the value of a 911...

Even comparing base model 911's to the 912's... a base 68 will bring $40-$50K in the market today... a 68 912 probably about $10-$15K... Again it is almost impossible to compare two cars unless you are talking about showroom condition but even then pretty much same applies, just bigger numbers... If you throw options etc. onto the 911 it blows the 912's away...

Compare a 65 911 vs 912.... $250K to $40K?
Compare a 67 911s Targa vs 67 912 Targa... $200K to $50k-$60K tops?

A quick search of Ebay SOLD listings shows that some very nice and fully restored 912's, highest one sold for $50K. Numbers matching and all - http://www.ebay.com/itm/Porsche-912-Base-FACTORY-SUN-ROOF-FULLY-RESTORED-CALIFORNIA-CAR-/181367389267?forcerrptr=true&hash=item2a3a56bc53&i tem=181367389267&pt=US_Cars_Trucks#ht_1802wt_1329

I'm not trying to rag on the 912's out there, it just is what it is~

There's a restored '65 912 for sale in Classic 911 and Porsche World for the equivalent of $90+k. Are you saying the same car as a 911 is a $200k car? You are probably right.

But long term I would bet a restored '66 or '67 912 is going to be worth more than a restored '70 or '71 911T. Just my gutt here but I think over time SWB will trump 6 cylinders. Though as was pointed out, which model matters. A '70 911S will always bury pretty much any 912 of any year.

A rust-free runner 912 would last a couple of minutes at $10k. It would last all of five minutes at $15k.

SWB 912s have been trading hands for $20-30k lately. Even in decent, unrestored shape. $10-15k was 2012.
