Thinking about quitting dentistry and combing junk yards maybe more profitable? This business will get out of control. It will get out of control and we'll be lucky to live through it (red October) |

Why do dentists have the highest suicide rates of any professional field?

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting a case-referent analysis of suicide by occupation. An initial analysis of deaths by suicide among white males showed that the five occupations with the highest odds ratios were psychologists, pharmacists, physicians, securities and financial service sales occupations, and lawyers. The study promises to be the largest of its kind since 1950 and should provide valuable insights into the complex relationships between suicide and occupation. (p. 450) |
Dentistry seems to have become a racket in recent years, at least here in Los Angeles. It's as though people are going into it for the $$ and the dentistry schools are stamping out WAY too many new dentists every year, making it hyper-competitive and leading to a lot of desperate marketing, etc.
I never used to feel like I was getting the hard sell at a dentist's office in the old days, (even 20 years ago). Now it feels different. It also seems, (completely unscientific I'll admit), like certain ethnicities are grossly over-represented in dentistry classes when I visit a friend who teaches @ UCLA. I don't know if the two things are related other than the over-population of people who want to be rich dentists in SoCal vs. I'm guessing a shortage in the Apalations. Anyhow, sorry for the sidetrack/rant. |
One would expect a higher success rate for suicide attempts among pharmacists and physicians due to ready access to lethal drugs and the knowledge of how to use them. A psychiatrist friend of mine once commented half-jokingly that a physician who unsuccessfully tried suicide lacks professional credibility.
As for dentistry, I have two siblings. My sister and I are physicians and my brother is married to a dentist. Guess which one has no mortgage, a second home and hasn't worked in 15 years. |
I'm a dentist in the Appalachians. Here are a couple of facts about me:
1. I am that 1 in 5 dentist who disagrees with everything. 2. Living in the Appalachians, my commute is freakin awesome!(I have ONE stoplight in my entire county- ONE!) 3. The rate of suicide among dentists only exist because so many people ask that same damn question at parties. "Hi, what do you do for a living? oh... you are a dentist.. I hear you have the highest rate of suicide." WTF? :) 4.Alcoholism, due to the fact that I don't want to "off myself" at the local parties making smalltalk with people who have nothing better to say than "so.. you want to kill yourself..", I end up at the bar instead! Later! R |
I dunno...I heard it on Seinfeld...it must be true.
