You Snooze...You Lose!
Just a few moments ago...a 1970 911T coupe on NH C-list (listed 2 hours ago) ...good condition..."strong running engine"....nice gray color...original Fuchs, etc....listed for 11,500. The car looked great!
So...I put down my computer to check my bank balance (yes, healthy enough for this!)...opened computer back up and reopened the C-list page - and - GONE!!! |

I had an appointment to see a car on a Saturday and it sold Friday. I also test drove a targa on a Wednesday and advised owner Id call him the next day with decision. Called next day and it sold that morning. Just wasnt meant to be. If I had bought either of those cars I would have been bummed when I saw the 82 sc coupe listed that I ended up buying.

I remember a thread someone linked to a '73 911S for sale from a while ago. Sounded like a nice car. Another member was interested and then surprised when it sold in less than 24 hours. I've seen cars like that sell in 24 seconds, definitely less than 24 minutes. Lol.

Christian,
Unfortunately today enthusiasts are not getting the cars they want unless they have contracted a "headhunter". But then guys with "real" jobs can afford a 10% finders fee on the right car. Basically enthusiast has been redefined. |

I picked up my 68L project off the list. Texted the guy back and forth about a half hour after he posted the car for sale. He had several others interested but I contacted him first. We talked the next morning and I told him I would pay full asking. I told him I planned to restore it (look for the thread soon). That might have helped. I don't think he wanted to sell to a flipper. He agreed to hold it for a few days until I could get there. Meanwhile some of the other parties were angry with him over the phone for sticking to his word even though we hadn't exchanged a penny. He was even offered more money to break our deal but the guy waited and I picked it up the following Saturday. I have to admit, I couldn't get there soon enough. It's all I could think about for three days. I turned out to be a really good deal even though the car needs a lot of work. All in all, he was informed on what he had and both parties were happy.
The moral of the story is. There are still some guys out there who will make a gentleman's deal and keep their word.

Yes, there are still some who will stick to their word. When I picked up my 993 last year I gave the guy a $500 deposit. He agreed to hold the car while I sorted out a PPI (I did two PPIs, one with a body shop). He was patient and when the first shop dragged their feet getting the PPI done (they had it five days!), he told me to get things sorted out with the place because he had other interested parties - it was stressful. That may or may not have been the truth, the car wasn't completely stock and I think had been overlooked by some. It wasn't perfect but had most all of the things I was looking for in a 993 (and I returned it back to stock). Thankfully it all worked out.
I think even over a year later with the way the market is, the car would have been gone in no time today.

A couple years ago I sold a Speedster and had just put it on a transporter. Started feeling bad about it so opened Ebay when I got home and found and ad that was just a couple hours old for one the same year but different color.
The car was clearly under priced at the "buy it now" and there were several bidders already at the starting price. In less than 30 seconds after I saw it, I hit the buy button. The seller said the bidders and question askers were furious that he "sold it out from under them" but clearly the people willing to make decisions quickly and take risks are rewarded- or in some cases punished. Amazingly, the seller stuck to his word although he had tons of backdoor offers and we flew to Alabama and drove the car back 2 days later. |
