911sc sunroof coupe value

Well I finally might be purchasing my first 911 and found an available SC sunroof coupe that I test drove the other day. The thing I want to ask you guys is your opinion on how much the value will be affected in the long run if the sunroof is taken out and a metal panel is welded in (assuming the mod is perfectly executed). I am just over 6' and wasn't expecting the limited head room. However once I started driving I immediately forgot about that

Taking the sunroof out involves also removing the supporting structure under the roof skin and above the headliner. That's not easily done. Figure repainting the roof, rear quarter panels and cowl. You'll also be pulling out all the glass, installing a new headliner and buying a bunch of new rubber seals for the glass.

To do it right will cost you thousands. Might be better to find a non-sunroof car, even if you have to pay more for it.

I'm 6'5" with a sunroofed 3.2(which I do plan on eventually deleting), what's the issue?

It would be cheaper to lower the seat brackets.

I have the same issue with headroom, so I drive either a cabriolet or a Targa.

I am 6'-2" and no problem with me fitting in current 911 (or any previous).
Perhaps a previous owner was shorter and modified the seats to raise them.

Thanks for the reply JR.

How many thousands are we talking about?

I understand that this alteration is quite extensive, but this particular vehicle would eventually need a repaint and the interior redone and figure once I would already be there why not do that also.

What do you think of the vehicle's value after such a mod? Will it be severely affected?

Thanks guys for all of the quick replies!

It was my first 911 experience and this was the obviously the first thing that I noticed when I sat in it. I'm glad to hear that it might be a seat bracket issue and will investigate further

Steering wheel spacers go a long a way to helping.

If you do the work when you are repainting the car anyway, then you're probably talking about $3K, because all you'll need at that point is a used roof, some labor and a new headliner. The paint, new rubber and glass R&R will have to be done anyway. If you have a 911 that needs new paint and a new interior, value is not much of a concern. The cars that become really valuable are the original, unmolested ones. If it is tired enough to need new paint and a new interior, it will need a bunch of other stuff, too. That kind of car is more "used car" then "future collectible". An SC is not a rare car.

I am in the same boat - I am 6'2" and all torso.

Besides making sure the seat is all the way down (if electric) there is a very easy mod you can make to get a tad more room. Pull the seat, flip it over and remove the clips that hold the springs together. They are about an inch long. This will allow the springs to sag a bit and drop you *maybe* 3/4 of an inch. It is a very quick/easy mod - and it allows you to find all sorts of random spare change and old french fries left by the previous owner!

The real question is, why is there a vase glued to the tree behind the car?

I am 6'6" and manage to squeeze myself into my '87 Coupe. Admittedly it's pretty tight, and my head is fairly smashed up against the ceiling. However, this is pretty much daily life for me in everything, so I guess I'm used to it. Everything kind of sucks when you're this tall.

At some point I'd like to lower the seat rails. Imagine being able to fit in the car with a helmet on for a DE event. It sure as hell won't happen now.

Stig is right, though. Get a smaller diameter wheel than stock (350mm vs. 380mm). Also put a spacer on there, as it really helps with getting your knees in and out. Our host doesn't sell much in the way of spacers, but there are other sites out there that do. PM if you need details.

Matt
