Nice car for young person wanted a "first" Porsche
A few weeks ago there was a thread from a guy in Pennsylvania looking for a "first Porsche" to buy for his teen son who is into cars.
They may have already got one, but this one seems to fit the bill to me. Again, no affiliation. This 1988 944 just popped on the DC Craigslist, asking only $7500. Porsche 944 1988 ![]() ![]() - Nice, unusual color: Dark blue, with very nice looking linen interior; 90% of these cars are red, black, or white; no cracks in dash. Car looks like it was garaged most of its life. - Same owner since 2000 (most of these are passed around like hot potatoes) - Claimed 66k original miles (from the pictures, it looks feasible) - Says he has all maintenance records - Posted receipt for timing belt, water pump, and new clutch and pressure plate. These are super fun, among the best handling cars of their day, and not so powerful that it will overwhelm a young driver. Big maintenance items have been done. If it checks out in person like it looks in the ad, this is as good a 944 as I have seen for sale in a while, at a very reasonable price. If this had been for sale 3 months ago, I would have bought it for my son.

Another nice find COLB, this looks to be very well taken care of and certainly would make a nice driver for a young man.
I remember my first 944, lots of fun and all down hill from there. Mike |

Sorry to say.. that car is way too cherry for a teenager's first ride. There is an abundance of rough around the edges 944's they can drive that won't be an unfortunate loss when the inevitable first accident comes.

Heck, it would cost $7500 just to rebuild the motor! Better off getting him a 99 Mustang GT with 260 H.P. Way faster car. Wait! Teenager? Get him the 944.

I tried that with my daughter. Wife said Hell No.
Great cars -- built like tanks, good mileage. Ended up getting her a 5-speed Mazda. She was one of the few kids in her HS that could drive a standard. ![]()

I have a feeling there will be a beautiful, lower mileage, 87 944S coming up for sale soon in my neck of the woods. All records and books.
I'll keep you guys posted. Nick

968s as well
Although the prices on these tend to be a bit higher, I have seen a number of great ones posted here. IIRC the prices on these have been <$15K with many looking impeccable. The 944 is probably the better option though.
My girls got to drive a '97 Volvo GLT wagon - quite possibly one of the best ones in the series that Volvo ever made.......and a car that they managed to destroy.

My son's first car was an '84 944 - which he purchased with his own hard earned $$ for 1200., and he and I had the best bonding experience...spending a summer together fixing it up and getting it safe and inspectable. Great educational experience also...ten years later my son is a successful Robotics engineer - MA from Carnegie/Mellon - just purchased a house in Pittsburgh (great town these days!) with his soon to be wife. Yes...I'm a proud dad, but of equal importance is that my son's early Porsche experience, according to him, definitely enhanced his passion for his current professional field of engineering.

PS - My son now drives a 2007 Saab Aero...which he's tricked out with software (!) so that now it develops over 350hp. and 400 ft/lbs of torque.
...but now his dad has the Porsche bug (on my second 944 and looking for an SC or 3.2) - a terminal illness which I thoroughly embrace! |

My first pcar was an 85 944 - I babied that thing like a super model, fantastic car fun to drive, and not too much HP for a youngster.

0-60 in 8 seconds and sharp enough handling to avoid trouble. A 944 is a good choice. 1st gen Boxsters are now pretty common below 10k and might work too although they are a bit quicker. One of my daughters got a 96 Passat as a first car. It was very fun to drive and she flogged it to death.
