Another 930 conversion, worth 25k?
 

Hey everyone!

Another 930 conversion has caught my eye and my heart. This one was done in 87' in California with an 85 car and an 87 engine.

Engine seems to be in great shape, no rust, 5-speed 915 transmission, really nice interior... has some issues though.

First one is these odd paint cracks. Wide body is all steel apparently and passed the magnet test but it looks like there might be a thin layer of pale yellow putty used smooth them out which has cause the paint to crack from expanding and contracting over the years? Just my guess, wondered if anyone has seen anything like it and if its a nightmare (I'll post a better picture later, forgot my dslr cable)

There are a few of these cracks around the car and it some small body issues; gasket seal on the taillights is completely dried out, hood strut doesn't work, side skirt edges rough, and a million paint chips.

There is also a small oil leak, not from the engine but on a pipe by the rear passenger fender. Doesn't look too serious but I'm not well versed in these cars.

I figure I can paint and fix most of the small defects if the engine and everything looks good from a ppi. I have some much better pictures I took this morning I'll post later this evening.

So my question is: what do you think this car is worth? A Frankenstein mash-up looking to be an on going nightmare? or an affordable 930 which could be polished (heavily) into a real gem.

Looks pretty nice to me. I cant tell from the pics that it is not a 930. What engine is in it, what about the brakes, suspension and interior parts?

Engine is from an 87' 930, has proper vin # and all. Not sure about the rest. Brakes looked good and felt great as well as suspension. Interior has newer seats in great shape, dash was a bit beat up, no a/c but clean overall.

Ok, what I meant was - are the susp and brakes turbo parts. From what you describe it sounds like a pretty good deal if checks out.

Are those cracks only near the flares? Could be a bad weld job and seams covered up with bondo.

I'm not sure if they're turbo parts are not; the seller seems to know nothing about the car.

And yes, the actual cracks are around the fenders. Is this a big issue if I wanted to repaint?

I talked to the seller he said he bought the car from his neighbour and was converted in California back in the day.
Maybe the seller could put you in contact with his neighbour and has more info on the build.

The owner who brought it up here is in the military and really only around a couple weeks each year so apparently I can't get a hold of him. Are you going to snatch this one up too plumber? haha

Fixing those add-on flares might be spendy, for sure. That's a buttload of Bondo to have that kind of cracking.

Worse, that motor is mated to a 915. A regular 915 can't take that kind of "go" for long. Even a built 915 is not the best choice. I'd be really wary on this car, even for that kind of money.

Car has been sold and not to me unfortunately, everyone made an offer and I had the highest cash offer until a gentlemen showed up in a trailer, he asked how much to beat my offer and went just over without me being informed or having a chance to bid. Bit frustrating but life goes on, the car certainly wasn't perfect (body, tranmission, etc) and I wasn't going to commit without a ppi on a car like that. Everything happens for a reason as they say.

Wow I just noticed this on the auto trader this morning, I guess his intention was to just flip it? Too bad, seemed like decent value at the original price.
