Bargain M491???
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-cars-sale/819350-1985-911-carrera-factory-turbo-look-m491.html
My thinking is that this car should be at least $10k higher on ask. What am I missing here? |

On a car like this, Euro versus US is meaningless.

There is a very frequent poster on the board who stole one from another unsuspecting member for about $12k last year.
THAT one was under priced. |

I met the owner and had a close look and drive today. Although I'm going to wait (actively looking) for a lower mileage example, this car was tempting! Much faster than a very low mileage 3.2 I own, overall an honest car with room for improvement. I know I'll pay a lot more for a perfect car so my opinion is the car is on the money and the seller is accurate in his posted description.

Now accepting US $ at par
|
He's asking $48k which I think is appropriate. A normal 3.2 with that mileage nowadays is ~low $30s, M491 adds a premium but I don't think this car is underpriced by any means.
Cheers d. EDIT: aren't those 17" wheels? No mention of stock Fuchs which on this car are $$$$. Last edited by dienstuhr; 07-06-2014 at 02:58 PM.. |

And as mentioned, it being a Euro is by no means a negative -- particularly on this model when it means a significant bump in HP. I agree that gold (or platinum metallic, or any comparable gold-like color) is not a plus, and is probably a negative.

Nice Looking Car but how do you know how may actual miles are on the car? The Speedo and ODO looks like it reads in MPH and miles the car would have one that read in KMH and KM's. How many KM's were on it when it was imported? How may miles since then?

This is a fair deal...if it were so great it would be sold by now. The hype is getting to everyone, don't let the crazy asking prices fool you. Although I believe the gap between euro and u.s have gotten smaller the euro cars will always be questionable unless car has fully documented history.

A ROW car is worth 10%-15% more like for like these days. A ROW 3.2 is much bette than US spec like for like. Lots of US cars have fake mileages anyway. Just as much chance on a 30 year old car to have mileage issues on a US car. So many flippers/dealers these days are swopping parts and rolling back speedos.
History can always be faked whether US or ROW. Its all about condition on a 30 year old car. People who know can figure out a the true mileage during a thorough PPI. |

Lots of cars have fake mileages. I'd love to see empirical evidence that US delivered cars are more likely to have tampered mileage than Row cars...

I guess you can criticize the asking price all day long, but pretty sure you won't see another Euro M491 coupe any time soon. Fair deal, IMO.

Still here

Imported euro means the speedo has been replaced at least once.
The lack of records should give anyone pause. How much is that worth ? |

I agree, would anyone pay the same price for this car if it had < 100K or if it had > 200K miles? What about documented history? How much is that worth?

More and more people stateside realize the ROW is a better performing car and most have been exported. No link just what I can see from looking at cars for sale and buying and selling a few ROW's myself. Since I bought my last ROW 3.2 two years ago I have seen very few come up for sale in the US. In Europe they demand an even bigger premium and are easier to import.

Most ROW cars came over here within a few months of build that I have seen anyway. Sure it would be nice to get the old kph speedo with this car and docs but now its 30 years old its condition that matters. Also a ROW M491 is a very collectible car these days, the condition is the issue on this car IMHO. I think the price is correct but a lot of buyers for this kind of car want a perfect one and are willing to pay more than this car to get it. Last edited by euro1984; 07-13-2014 at 05:12 PM.. |
