1983 911 SC Check

One more for y'all today. I was looking very seriously a couple of years back and never ended up buying do to life. Looking seriously again and trying to get a feel for this market.

This car is local to me and I went to look at it last night. The car drove excellent. Everything seems to work on the car no oil leaks. Even the AC was blowing pretty darn cold on a 90 degree temp and humidity day. Current owner has had a lot of work done to the car in the past couple of years and couple of thousand miles. Tighten head studs, complete tune up including plugs, wires, valve adjustment, new clutch, most of the brake system replaced, new tires, targa top, headliner and seals this year.

Interior I give a solid 8.5 out of 10. Smallest of crack starting in the dash at one of the defrost vents and the ugly speakers in the doors are really the only flaws besides some faded floor mats. Carpets were nice. Seats were near perfect.

Outside the car is super straight and seems to be rust free. Couple of dings on the trunk from someone shutting it on top of something. Wheels are in decent shape. Now we get to the worst part of the car which is the paint. It is a repaint and really only a 10 footer due to flaws. Looks like it was at lest done with all of the trim off. The real issues are cracking on the aftermarket fiberglass tail/engine hatch (also never got the matching chin spoiler) and quite a bit of damage from rubbing and moisture all across the front end and on fenders in front of the wheel wells from what the owner says and looks to be from use/misuse of a bra from a prior owner.

Few photos below which are pretty bad. They don't do the interior justice as it really looks much better in person and they don't show the obvious flaws in the paint.

I think the owners asking price is high but think I could probably pick it up for around $17k. I want a good running driver. I know a repaint would be very costly but it is presentable as is and definitely seems like a great driver. I could live with the paint. What do you think of the price for condition? Worth it given the paint issues?

Mileage?

17k seems a bit high to me. I'd be comfortable with the paint issues if the car was priced around the 15k mark.

Just my opinion.

If the engine is sound, and the interior is as nice as you indicate, $17k seems a very fair price to me. $15k is optimistic. Finding a mechanically sound 83SC under $20k is getting difficult unless it is a salvage, or extremely high miles.

There are some question marks -- that steering wheel is from a mid year. Weren't the 83s still using York a/c compressors?

Is the paint the original color? If so, that is an odd color combination.

If you got into this car at $17k you could do a decent respray and still be in good shape financially -- especially if you do some of the prep yourself.

@ 17k, buy it now conditional to the PPI result, or regret it for life...

When driving my car, the reason I bought it, I don't see any flaws on the paint neither does anybody seeing me driving by

It is the original color of Light Bronze Metallic 966. Seats could well be recovers. They were vinyl not leather fronts and backs were a match.

My 83 coupe has similar or same color combo. Quartz Grey Metallic paint, burgundy interior. Stock original

If a PPI checks out the price isn't bad

Check the paperwoek then buyit. Less common color SCs are the next thing. Once you get it,sell the tail, sort the speaker covers and just drive the snot out of it

Great color and cool interior, Buy it, Keep the tail and add a front spoiler. Looks like an early turbo tail but hard to tell from the photo.

ROW car? If so, the mileage means nothing w/o extensive records.

It is a US car and originally purchased in NC then moved to MS then here. VIN and Autocheck agree.

Looking like the general consensus is it may be a decent car given an acceptable PPi.

Deposit now! Subject to PPI.
As long as you're sure you want a Targa, this is a strong buy!

Went and looked at this car again and made a deal pending a PPI. Car runs and drives excellent, interior is very nice. Current owner has done a lot of work to it in the past couple of years getting everything sorted. A pretty unique color combo. I like the maroon interior and the Light Bronze Metallic exterior you don't see much. Has some paint issues (like the slightly off match driver door) but it still looks pretty good. For what I had to give for it I don't think I can go too wrong if everything checks out as I think it will. Going to put on a front spoiler to match the tail and enjoy driving it.

If the thing passes a leak down and has no head issues or clutch issues.... 100k miles, if accurate, means nothing. Mine has more and barely feels broken in. I love the color, not a huge fan of the tail, but that's your call.

Neat car. It sounds like you are getting it cheap, enjoy it then move on if you want and you drove it for free.

Sub 20 cars are hard to come by. If the ppi is good you got a bargain!
