price check 964 cab with tip

Hey guys,

Does $23k seem ballpark for a 4 owner, stock 1990 964 cab with 54k miles and documentation? Only knocks against the car are that it is a tiptronic and in 96 it had a parking lot accident where the rear bumper was scuffed and repaired. I'm getting a ppi this week.

TIA

Alex

Those are two big knocks. Tips are not well loved, and priced accordingly.

Thanks for the reply, Nick. When you say, "and priced accordingly", did you mean 23K is a reasonable price for the car described or were you saying tips get priced less than manuals?

Seems like a 54k mile 964 cab with manual transmission would sell for somewhere in the 30K+ range, so I was thinking 23K was a fair price for a tip (as long as the ppi is clear).

If things check out, its a fair price.... As long as you are ok with the tip...you are right it would likely be in the 30 k plus range with manual transmission. Good luck, Tim

Alex,
I think a 54k 964 Cab would be high $30's, if a manual. $40+ if a coupe. Those are some low miles!
$23K seems very reasonable. Beware, Tips are a hard sell IMO.

The market is so very thin for tips, I know of some 993 tips that have been sitting for some time in the mid-high 20'S. 95% of guys on this board would never even think of one. I drove my brothers 991 with PDK for a couple of days, I might as well been driving a Lexus. I highly recommend you drive one and make sure its not going to bother you. To each his own. Tim

I don't know how different the pricing is for Targas vs. cabs, but a local dealer has a 91 Targa Tiptronic with 68,000 miles for $16,000. The car has been sitting on the lot for at least 8 months. I haven't looked at the car nor have I researched its history, maybe there's more to the story.

There's a big difference between being a market spectator and a market participant. The price is good on the cab.

I have had quite a few people ask me for Tiptronic 964s and have had no trouble finding them and sending them to new homes.

A repainted bumper cover is a non-issue. A bigger issue is the color. If it's red, that's a bigger hit on value.

The overriding issue on a '89-91 3.6 is that Porsche decided to do away with head gaskets and the engines started leaking -- some so quickly that the dealer rebuilt the top end under warranty. Porsche wised up by mid '91. I'd like to see documentation that work was done. If not, there's a 20% or so chance the engine will need fixing. Records and PPI on this one.

Tips are a good way to get into a 964 or 993 which one might not otherwise be able to afford. The the tip serves its purpose for driving in heavier traffic. I think as values climb beyond reach for a lot of people, these cars will climb also. What will people do when clutches go away completely? I think Porsche understands that most of the next generation of new drivers will no nothing about driving a manual transmission car. I think the asking price for the 964 cab above is very reasonable as long as the engine leakage problems have been addressed

That is interesting what you say about the color red. If I was looking for say a nice 993 I would look for Guards red first, then black. I think there are still a lot of us out there who like red.

Nachtfalter 10-05-2014 04:10 PM

I have never even heard of anti-red sentiment until I started lurking here.... it's entertaining to say the least. I'm pretty sure it only exists here.

Also, 23k seems reasonable if the PPI checks out.

aualexa2 10-05-2014 05:17 PM

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. Luckily, the car isn't red. It's silver over black. I'll be calling tomorrow to set up a PPI. I'll update this post when the results are in!

I purposely chose a red 964 targa because that was what I grew up learning how to drive in back in the early 90's with my aunt in San Diego. I loved the experience so much that I wanted my daughter to experience the same thing with the same car. Of course, her car was stolen and likely taken across the border and chopped up- so thats something I won't mind not having the same experience with.

I think Guards Red is far better than brown, white, silver or purple.. Now I think those would take a hit.

So, ppi results: compression 145-150 across all cylinders. Leakdown between 10-20 across all cylinders. The leakdown scares me a bit. I thought those numbers were high, but the owner of the shop said it was decent. Btw, the shop is one that has had many reports as being reputable, good, etc. He also said the engine needs to.be dropped and resealed.

I'm planning on walking away. I welcome any additional thoughts/comments.

At 23k you could convert it to a manual and still be under the market.

Walk away. Leakdown over 10% = :-(
