4 speed manuals
 
How rare are these? Are they Euro only?

What year? On most longhoods, 4spd was standard and 5spd was an option. However we got so many 5spds in the States because dealers ordered them that way.

I have a euro 4spd. 1972.

The only difference between the 4 and 5 speed trannies on the LWB cars were the 3rd and 4th gears.
3rd gear was longer on the 4 speed.
4th gear on the 4 speed and 5th gear and the 5 speed were the same. Both cars had the same top speed gearing.
There are advantages to each gearbox. With the 4 speed there is one less gear to shift thru, and on the 5th speed, the rev range can be better optimised in 3rd and 4th gears.
I owned a 70 911T with a 4 speed, and after driving the 4 speed for a few days, the lack of 5th gear wasn't an issue. In fact, it took away the issue of potentially nicking reverse when shifting from 1st to 2nd gear.
By the way, what is a "euro" 4 speed?

A Euro 911 is just a way i call a car that was sold new in Europe.

Looking in the book "Excellence was expected" it says this about the difference in 4spd and 5spd.

So it looks like for 2nd thru 4th is different.

Sorry, I forgot about this thread until it was bumped. In '74 the 4spd was still standard in the US and optional for 5spd. Starting in '75 was when that changed.

What you are reading is accurate for the 915 gearbox. However, prior to that, all the 901 and 911 gearbox variants had 4th and 5th the same in all the standard gearboxes. It was "X" on SWB cars, "Z" for '69 (actually from Nov '68 production on, some early '69 MY cars actually got an aluminum 901 gearbox), and then '70-71 got a "ZA" top gear.

Here's a thread with scans of the factory spec books for your reference, including type numbers, serial numbers, and the special ratio gearboxes.

Are those numbers for the 901 gearboxes or 915 gearbox? The 4 speed I was refering to was a 70T, so the 5 speed would have been the 901. If you have the owners manual for your car, there should be a chart comparing the 4 and 5 torque curves, etc.

Yes these are the gearing sets for the 915 in 1972.
I just took them from the book, so they should be accurate.
