What is a '82 SC Coupe with 964 bumpers worth?
Quickly looked at a 1982 911 SC Coupe with 964 bumpers, rockers, and decklid (motorized). It ran and shifted well. It has Moda by BBS wheels and a Momo steering wheel.
Paint is driver quality, black interior has newer carpet and aftermarket Recaros from the 1990s I think. Gauges are white face, and it has H5 headlights. The seller bought it recently from a widow who said her husband only had it serviced by a respected mechanic that I use myself. It has a PCA window sticker. I will be calling him soon to get his thoughts on the car, but I'm mainly asking for the value of a car that's been converted to a 964 look minus the motor. I'm either going to drive the car "as is" or possibly buy the original parts and convert the car back to original and sell the conversion parts, Seats, and wheels. Thanks! |

Well I'm no expert but it's not original so don't pay market price for an original car which I think is in the $30k ish range for a good original driver.
If you like the look of it, just enjoy it as is. Then you can slowly collect the original parts for down the road if you ever want to sell it. Most people who'll see the car will have no idea it's not original. I can't believe all the people going bonkers over having to have original cars. Although I think they look good stock, I do prefer to have a modified car. Good luck, hopefully you can work out a good deal for yourself. And post pics of the car! I'd be taking a vary hard look at how well those visual mods were completed. I think appearances would have a large part in me evaluating that car. If done correctly and well, it's still below the value of an original car.
You mention nothing about mechanicals. Needless to say, this is the crux of the matter. Get in and drive the thing and talk extensively with your mechanic. If everything checks out, I'd say $25K.

You should also be asking why the mods were done. Accident? As for price, some really nice SC seem to be 30k based upon recent threads here on the Discussion board. Try subtracting the cost of switching the car back to its original build when determining a price. Sometimes taking something off a car is more expensive than putting it on. And the original SC cars are the ones people are paying extra for, not the aftermarket Frankensteins...

I'm going to have MY mechanic do a PPI. He supposedly knows the car well according to the seller who is just a flipper. That's what the widow of the previous owner told him. It drove well, made no noises, and shifted fine. Brakes were firm. Visual for oil leaks showed a few from the valve cover gaskets and oil tank sender.

I recently bought a 912E that someone had put 964 bumper covers on.
It was a thing people did in the 90s. In some cases, when a car gets "upgraded" or "updated," there's some value in the parts used. Genuine 964 bumper covers have some market value; fiberglass replicas not so much. But likely even the factory 964 parts are worth a bit less than the original SC parts you'll need to buy to put it right. If it were me, I'd ding the car -$1500 for the bumper update.

They might be Recaro Speed in black cloth. I will be looking at the car again this weekend.

I am not saying I disagree with anything that has been said in this thread, I agree, all original has more value. It does seem like an "updated" car takes a hit in value unlike a "backdated" car. If someone "updates" a car, it's a "Frankenstein". If someone "backdates" a car, it's a masterpiece.
Seems to be trend dependent. So, if you like the updated look, keep it that way and just drive and enjoy the car. If you prefer original, then either keep looking or plan accordingly to get it back there. That's the great thing about these cars...lots of options. As far as value, I agree with the 25K price mentioned above.

Update, the carfax shows it as being a theft recovery in Florida in 1991-1993. Minor rear accident in 2007 in another state. Possibly the bumpers were changed then? The car is at the shop getting a PPI. Will hear the results by Wednesday.
The car has a Vertex fan housing. I'm now curious as to whether it was changed due to the infamous mag fan housing cracks or because the accident damaged the original. Last edited by 77Targa0912; 12-22-2014 at 07:10 PM.. |
