Value of '65 912 project?
I just picked up this '65 912 and now i'm reconsidering whether I should restore it. It currently has a type 1 vw engine in it which will most likely need to be replaced as it has been sitting open in the elements with no carb on it. It also has some fiberglass flares as well as bumpers and a whale tail, though I got the original bumpers and decklid with it so those will be going back on. The rust seems to be very minimal with just the front pan being affected so it's a pretty solid car. The body is in good shape and pretty straight. I originally planned on dropping a 2.7 into it and making it into a little hot rod, but now i'm thinking it may be a shame to hot rod out such an early car (though clearly somebody already has tried). I really want a long nose 911, but maybe it would be better to just sell this project on and get an sc and backdate it depending what I can get for the 912. What are your thoughts on the value of the car as it sits?

The VW engine is a killer on value. Probably $6-8k. Everyone thinks they have a 65 but most turn out to be 66's. Do you have non adjustable struts, 4 screw grilles, washer bag in fender, vin and vin tag together etc?

post a picture of the interior and vin plate inside the drivers door, that will tell a lot, and you could get lucky and have something more valuable than you think

You could be right. I put the vin into 912registry and it said 1965, but that could be date of manufacture?

Not sure how to check the struts or grilles, but it does look like the washer filler goes into the fender. Vin and vin tag are together as posted.

That's a 1965 prodate for a 1966 model. Still becoming a valuable car. I suspect it's worth more than you think.

it's an early vin but a 66 paint code, how about a picture of the dash, if it's still mostly original it could answer the question

Ok so its a model year 66 with a date of production in 1965. What do we think it's worth? Should i swap in another vw engine to get it running?

No, in fact you should remove the VW engine and sell it as a roller. The VW engine will negatively impact the value of this car!

Were it a 65 with painted dash, it would be worth quite a bit more, but as a regular old 66, not as much. I recently picked up a similar project with matching engine for 10K, that seemed a fair price, and comparable to a couple others out there. Without matching engine, you should still get 7-7500 for it.
I have engine #741099, which would be pretty close, within 100-150 engines of this car should whoever you sell it to be interested. |

My guess is $8K as a project roller.
My vote is to keep it and hot rod it. It looks like a great candidate as it already needs quite a bit of body work to get it back to stock. Backdating is quite a bit of work ($$) so I doubt there's a financial advantage of selling this project and buying a later model. Bargain 911s are simply harder to find now than even a year ago. Also, I'd guess that all other things being equal a flat-6 912 is worth more than a stock 912. |

I've been kicking the idea of doing a 912 "hot rod" so I'd rebuild the VW, or have one built (maybe Pat at CB Performance), up grade the suspension and dial it in, etc... A 912 will always be a 912. They have a smaller market and they engine parts will continue to get more and more expensive and less accessible where as VW parts have a huge aftermarket source. The original motor is long gone so no matter what, unless you have a stroke of luck, you'll never have a #s matching car. Yes, I know, the enthusiasts will poo poo the idea but it is what it is.
You already have the beginnings of a great little hot rod, finish it and enjoy driving it. Besides, they say those older cars are better with a light weight motor in the back There's great link somewhere of a guy in france who restored an old 912 with a VW in it. It's really cool. He's kind of a "Magnus Walker Junior" of the long hood 912s

No offense intended, but to my eye with the whale tail, the deep set wheels, and the angle of the photo, the rear of the car looks a lot like a current NHRA Pro Stock. The rear flares seem to be quite unusual and radical. Not sure how you would ever fill them properly with correct wheel/tire combo. There's a lot of inner lip at the rear.
They would also be quite expensive to "undo" since they are carried so high up the quarter panel. I say keep it as it is and play around at will to see what you can come up with. Might take quite a bit of grunt from the engine to get the proper size tire rolling from a dead start. |
