Value of 1968 912 Soft Window Targa Project Car

Yet another value my car thread......

I bought this as a parts car for my 1969 912 and after buying learned that A)Very few parts are compatible and B) Soft Window Targa cars have shot through the roof in value.

Details:
  • Tangerine over black
  • Matching Numbers Car
  • Lots of rust to the underside. Need to replace floorboards, rockers, jack points, front pan.
  • Damage to right rear quarter panel
  • Targa top needs to be completely rebuilt
  • Most interior parts are there. Missing targa boot and passenger seat
  • Missing exterior parts - Bumpers, lights, hood, decklid
  • Will require a brave soul with $$ to go through with restoration

I saw one on ebay last week, rough shape, though better than mine with most of the interior missing and a non-matching engine with a Buy It Now of $19,000. It shows "Best offer accepted" but I can't see what that offer was or what it sold for. That seems really high for a non matching engine car with most of the interior missing.

That said, mine is rough, but rust bucket coupes have been selling for close to $10k on ebay and these soft window targa cars are pretty rare animals. I don't see many for sale in similar condition to mine.

I need to take better photos in daylight:

Neither do I. The smart side of me says sell the coupe and restore the soft window Targa since it will outpace it in value in the long run and give a much healthier return on investment. The practical side of me says coupe will be much easier to put on the road and more enjoyable in the short term. A soft window would be cool, but this one isn't for the faint of heart..............

I'd love to stick it in a dry barn for another 10 or 20 years until I can afford to restore it, but I could really use the cash now for my 69 coupe project.

BTW, you Sir have an impressive collection of cars........

Actually, SWT 912 cars are approaching $80k in fully restored condition. I may be a little biased but after watching non-matching coupes in similar or worse condition sell for 6k-8k on ebay, I think Milesaway is more inline with current market value. Again, I am a bit biased, but you seem to be placing this car in the same league as the coupe market which is severely lagging behind targas, especially rare soft window cars.

I was thinking the car would sell on ebay for about 15k, but I could be very wrong. Thats why I reached out for a general consensus. For any less than $15k, I may hold on to it. If I could get north of $15k it would be a much easier decision for me. It'll probably go on fleabay in the coming weeks with a comfortable reserve to test the waters.

Yeah they are all amazingly different yet the same As you can see i have a soft spot for soft windows Realistically most of us are only going to be able to restore to driver level so i put the done value at $60k tops. Mine is nice but i think its only worth $40k. GL

This car makes me wish I had my new out building built now instead of this summer. Neat and unique car and people are starting to wake up to the fact that 912s are real Porsches.
$12-15k would be where I think it would sell. EBay would tell you that. $8k is a joke. I could part it for that, even with the rust. '68 is unique.

You bring up a good point about targa outpacing coupes for the 69-73 cars. We all know the SWT are the top, but I've been hearing that people are now valuing targas higher than coupes? I think I read it on this forum.

I remember nobody wanted sunroofs or targa and now I think the premium is a sunroof car over a coupe.

Thanks Matt. I agree that parted out (which would be a crying shame) it would bring in more than 8k. The targa top, visors, soft window, latches, and other interior pieces alone are huge money right now.

I also agree people are realizing how great 912s are. They are rooted in very deep Porsche history sharing qualities of both the early 911 and 356 cars. They are simply great cars!

That said, I hate selling Porsches. Always kicking myself in the rear years later............

Back when people actually drove these cars instead of collecting them like stamps (which I would love to be able to do by the way), coupes were appreciated for their inherent rigidity and relative lightweight nature. Better for tracking or spirited driving. Now it's all about collectibility and everyone wants low production examples. I bought my 1970 911 Targa 17 years ago for $3,000. It was a project but no rust and mostly complete. When I bought that car, longhoods weren't appreciated. People were converting them to impact bumpers to make them look more modern. Now people are spending a fortune backdating their impact bumper cars to look older. We live in a strange world.........

Thanks. I have most of the interior, less a few items. Mostly just missing exterior parts which are easier to find. When I get around to listing on ebay I'll report back what it gets bid up to.

Well, $8,500 is where it ended up. Maybe I'm a bad salesman, or eBay is just unpredictable, but that seemed low. I might list here at $12k to see what happens. As Matt mentioned previously, the car would part very easily and lucratively but it would be sad to see such a rare car get parted out. I'd rather sell for less to someone who will restore.

You never know with EBay. I once listed a car 3 times and on the last round it sold for triple any of the previous bids.
