Anyone deal with European Collectibles Costa Mesa, CA

I'm generally dealer adverse. This car caught my eye. 1969 Porsche 912 Coupe for sale #1721527 | Hemmings Motor News

Was thinking about giving them a call, but would like to know if you all have feedback on the dealer (or the car). The rest of their cars for sale seem nice. They are dealer priced for sure, but not bonkers priced.

I'm curious too, have my eye on the green 74 911. Nice car, but price seems quite high.

They cater to an expensive part of the world (2nd showroom on PCH in Newport Beach) so their prices reflect that, but I've been in a few times and Chris has always been helpful and the cars are legit. I've also seen a few of their cars in the body shop I use and it's a quality place so I don't think they cut corners getting the cars ready for market......

Yup green 74 and green T were both nice, and priced fairly if the work is as good as it looks.

Sidney is your impression that they are mostly commissioning restorations or selling other people's restored cars?

They do both, the main shop on Babcock is a decent size and there are always 20-30 cars in there and half a dozen mechanics at work, but I don't know how much of it is their cars (restored or needing restoration) versus consignments.

They also do open houses which indicates a good relationship with their local clients....

We are talking the OC and Newport Beach. The folks who live there are rich. No two ways about it. They would not allow a junk dealer in their neighborhood. Also, that shop has been there many years unlike Euromasters which was a flash in the pan.

Always interesting to see what's on the dealer lots.

In this case, I count

15 356's
5 longhoods
6 G-series, only one G50 and it's a speedster
7 912's.

Good store with nice inventory. They sold my 71T and a pleasure to deal with.

Glad to hear some positive reviews. I have never even come close to buying from a dealer before. Do they typically negotiate to some extent?

I've never bought at such a high end dealership but yes, you can negotiate. Oh I've been to Symbolic, they are high end. They were very cordial and you can just give them your offer and go from there, doesn't hurt.

Jeff Trask, who works at EC, know 912s and will not buy junk. He is very active in the 912 community. Call him up.

If that car is original paint/original color and high quality on the repaint, I'd call that a decent deal.

Color change or low-quality respray, and it could reasonably called a "negotiation tool" and hope that you can get them down into the mid-30s.

Spoke to him today - very nice guy and extremely open about his inventory. Willing to criticize, pick apart etc. The tangerine car I linked to does not have a numbers matching motor - it is from a 67 and was rebuilt in 2012 with all the normal upgrades. The interior is preserved the exterior was repainted. Impossible to get a feel for how nice the paint is. Jeff didn't wax poetic, but he didn't apologize for it. The word "nice" came up a lot. It is in the eye of the beholder. Same applies to the brightwork.

Non numbers matching could not matter less to me, and I am presuming that in the lower echelons (ie very nice driver level) it wouldn't matter to most buyers.

One thing that gives me pause is looking at a car like this: Los Angeles Porsche Speedster Dealers Los Angeles Used Porsche Dealer
Targa, boring color, not particularly remarkable... offered at what I would call rather weighted dealer pricing. Maybe its more worthwhile buying a harder to find car like a 912 from a knowledgeable dealer than it is for a "commodity car" (sorry) such as an SC which can be found in similar condition all over CL, ebay etc?

Anyone in the immediate are willing to do a walk-by to help me get a better feel for the car?

What is the date cut-off for green gauges, brushed alum dash and headrest-less seats? I'm guessing all three are considered more desirable? They are to me at least...

Drive. But as a third old car for a not very rich dude, it needs to make sense as something to hold. I'm not trying to flip it but I need to be realistic - If I loose some garage space in 3 years I want to have my bases covered with regards to value.

I recently checked out a car at EC for a distant client. Spoke with Jeff. Really appreciated his honesty. More like dealing with a consultant than a salesman.
