Hagerty

I just checked Hagerty. Are condition 4 cars really only valued at $15,800? My car is between a condition 3 and 4 but I never see them for sale at that low of a price.

Nick, Hagerty values generally lag the actual current selling prices. I'm also of the opinion that since the sales that feed their value charts are heavily weighted to condition 3->2 cars, the values shown for the lesser condition cars are a bit unreliable.

Assuming you are talking about the '85 shown in the Garage, no way is that a $16k car. In today's market, I can't see any running, driving and intact 3.2 going for less that $20k.

They should have new figures this month. They update in April, August and December.

I don't really agree with their valuations. They say a condition 4 1976 911S coupe is worth $10,300 but a condition 4 1976 912E coupe is worth $13,200. If I were to straight trade my 912E for a similar condition 911 I'd feel like I made out like bandit.

My idea is that Hagerty can lag by more than 6 months, and I've seen them lag as much as a year.

We were talking about the unloved mid-years get love last summer. Last fall, they started trading in what used to be SC territory. Now you see them in the 20s and I've seen up to 40 (dreamer, but still). If they could point me to two condition 2 '76 911s for $11k per, I'd buy them both, sight unseen.

As far as I can tell the midyear market is split between the big dollar 74 and to a lesser extent the 75 and then the 76-77 cars. Condition 2 74s are selling for almost longhood prices. The 76 and 77 cars are fully smog restricted in places like California and urban Colorado. Condition 2 and 3 76-77 911s are sitting for months at mid-20s asking prices.

IMO the least expensive (to buy) aircooled 911 is still the 76-77 911. There was a condition 4.5 76 Targa in Tucson that took days to sell at a 12k asking price a couple weeks ago. There's a condition 3.5 76 Targa in Denver that is on the market for less than 18k. Comparable SCs and Carreras are on Phoenix craigslist for low-mid-20s.

Hagerty lags the market when it's moving fast, but right now the market seems to be taking a breather. I think Hagerty's numbers are a decent starting point for a value estimate. As has been said many times, owners often overestimate the level of their own cars, leading to unrealistic value expectations.

How do you value a 1995 993 C2 coupe manual? probably #3 . Hagerty values only go to 1994,s
Looking at autotrader asking prices are still rising and seem to have exceeded $40 now but don,t have any sales data points.

Anybody who wants a FREE copy of the Hagerty price guide (a $20 value) swing by the Unobtanium booth at Hershey, Booth C60. We are stuffing the price guides in our goodie bags, along with lots of cool stuff from folks like Porsche, Recaro, and Restoration Design.

Wow. Maybe I should take a trip to Boulder. Sounds like a lot of deals out there!

I made that trade about 18 months ago and yes the 76 912E sold for more than the 77 911S cost by a significant margin. Both were nice cars, solid number 3's

76 912E

77 911S
