what to do with my 74 911 targa?

I have a 74 targa that is a california car with zero rust. One respray in the 90's from gemini blue to a dark green that looks okay but has flaws. Other then that the car is original with only normal wear.
I have the motor out to fix a pulled head stud. The 915 gear box is in good shape.

So my question is, do I repaint back to the original color and ask top dollar or just fix the head stud and sell it that way for a few dollars less. Also, what to ask for each scenario.

Some info needed.
- Is this your personal car? When did you buy, or how much do you have into it?
- You fixing one head stud or replacing them all?
- Photos of the rest of the car? Condition of everything? Rust?

Mid-years, 74s specifically are moving up. Jury's out on how relevant that is to your sitch.

It's going to be a lot more than a few dollars less.

But unless you have the ability to paint it yourself, at cost, you're probably better off selling it as-is. The metrics of the autobody business make it hard for you to make your money back if you're paying retail (or even close to it).

Not sure what the reliability debate has to do with the discussion of the value of a repaint on a mid year?

How bad is the paint condition, and how well was it painted? Was it a good quality, windows and interior-out color change, or splashed on with lots of blue showing underneath?

Are you actually a dealer, or do you just buy and sell cars on the side? By your post history you have sold 3-4 cars here over the past six months.

The car deserves a repaint to its original color -- especially if the current repaint was half-assed.

Considering Gemini Blue is a particularly sweet color that will pull a premium, and 74s are really desirable, there is probably profit in a a repaint. Check this car out:

Dude was selling it here on Pelican for $51k, and it appears to have sold on Ebay for $42k -- although it was briefly relisted, so who knows. But I think it is reasonable to assume it went north of $40k:

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-cars-sale/843720-1974-porsche-911-targa-gemini-blue-41k-miles.html

Look at those pictures and honestly assess where yours is compared to that one. Factor in the repaint, and make a decision.

If you are just flipping it for a buck, it probably isn't worth your time. But if you are doing it as a hobby for the fun of it as much as for the money, there is some extrinsic value in setting it right.

You seem to be doing this as a business, so you should be able to figure out your own supplier costs and margins to determine what you should ask.

Don't repaint. Sell as is with the engine fixed. Move on.

You can maybe get a few grand more with corrected and high quality repaint, but you will lose $5K+ in the process. 2 years ago, I paid $1600 for a gallon of Glasurit Gemini Blue Metallic. Even a mid- level shop will need another $7K to do the paintwork - and that would be if you disassembled and reassembled the glass and trim yourself. Oh, and you'll want to spend another $700 or so on body seals.

Hard to establish a price based on a single photo and skimpy description, but assuming the trans and clutch are in excellent condition, you could get low- to mid $20s I think, in this market. Maybe a bit more.

But to your original question, it's my opinion that spending $9-10K on it will not raise the value commensurately. It needs not only fresh engine and paint, but also low miles, Fuchs, excellent interior, history and a rebuilt top to break $30K.

Aren't the cookie cutters stock?

Here is another data point:

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-cars-sale/855386-1974-porsche-911-targa-less-than-35k-miles.html

Claimed crazy low miles in unrestored condition -- but cosmetically decent, but paint looks shot, with rust in the door jambs and elsewhere; not moving fast at $32.5.

Do NOT look at eBay listings or even what appears to be an eBay sale and assume anything from the prices shown.

Our Gemini car (we're a small dealership) pictured here sold for more than $42. Closer to our ask.

The car was cared for and garaged it's whole life, in southern California. It had under 50k documented miles and an excellent, fresh respray.

Depending on how much work your car needs, I say do it all and do it right. The 74s with all their differences from the later mid-years are special cars and deserve a correct restoration. Not that the 75-77s don't..

If you are interested in taking on a big project and are in to racing or drifting as I am I recommend that you take it and do a few tweaks to the suspension such as coil overs and sway bars and then exhaust. Put in a supercharger if you have the money. Throw in rims and tires and now you have a working drift or track worthy car.

Don't forget curb feelers and mud flaps.

Gotta have mud flaps. The kind with the naked lady silhouettes on them.

Good luck with that. Vintage 911s have open differentials. You show me a 911 with an open differential drifting like Tofu Man does and I'll pay your entry fees at your next event.

I assume the Nissan dude is a sock -- and the post was a joke (PML?). It is too absurd to be serious. Plus the first post.

No one says it doesn't take a lot of WORK to make a clown car.

Pull the rear seats, special brakes, etc.

And beef up the suspension. Otherwise it bottoms out when you put all the clowns inside.

Likely got booted from the Nissan forum and needs a new nest to befoul.
