Market value vs value to Owner

I am not trying to kick off another string of posts that talk about the high cost to purchase a 911 but rather delve into the unique relationship we have with these cars. If wanted to sell my 4runner, I would check CL, see what is out there and make up a number. But selling my 911 takes in factors for which there are few extrinsic tools to measure. I go back to childhood memories and silly promises.

Imagine being a buyer with that same thought plus the desire to be part of something like Porsche ownership and gobs of cash.

My point is that for as long as these cars remain special to us, their value to us is not just determined by rarity, color, condition or history but rather by us. Meaning the 911 has two values. Market value and how much money would it really take for you to hand over the keys to someone else... Forever.

That answer is different for each of us. And that is what, in my humble opinion, adds to what makes these cars so valuable. It is a forum like no other that gives shelter to owners and enthusiasts to ensure we are indeed not alone.

Perhaps one day, all of the 911s will be only in the hands of those who cannot come up with a number greater than the value to them. I like to think it will happen in my lifetime. Wouldn't that be interesting.

I think you bring up a very good point. There have been times when I loved my car and times where I have been somewhat indifferent. For some, every time they walk out to the garage and see their car,it puts a smile on their face. My PCA tour day last Sunday was the most fun I have had in a long time. It varies for everyone though. If you don't absolutely need the money, what are you going to do with the $30k you can get from a typical 3.2? There still aren't many better cars out there for that kind of money. The money will probably be spent on ?

The car has an amazing ability to turn short drives into hour long excursions :)

Financial problems otherwise, I can't imagine any situation where I would consider selling it.

To paraphrase the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers:

Porsches will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no Porsches.

Priceless. And I wouldn't have pegged you with familiar with the Freak Brothers. Never judge a book...

Uh, sorry, but I had the original phrase on my dorm room door in 1970. Never, ever thought to substitute the word 'Porsche'!

trader220 04-18-2015 11:50 AM

I am with you Nick.... I remember the phrase but there was a different word in it where the word "Porsche" is. LOL

SilberUrS6 04-18-2015 12:04 PM

IIRC, "pussy" was the word.

Was at hershey today. There were a LOT of owners who baked in their emotional attachment when they priced their cars for sale.

More to follow in a separate post.

Uhh, dont go there buddy! That kind of man is pretty popular here.

Actually I think that shaved white color punks have more to do with the prices of the cars - why have cash earning zero to negatve interest when you can have nice cars that gains in value instead!?

Owners can have all the emotional attachment in the world and price their cars at whatever price that attachment brings... But eventually reality kicks in and need trumps wants. Having seen numerous over priced cars sit unsold for months on end, you have to ask yourself if the person actually wants to sell the car. Is it emotional attachment or greed? Why post a car for sale and let it sit unsold for months? There are two people who sell cars. Someone who needs to get the money out of the car to do something different, whatever it may be. They usually start out high but will eventually take a reasonable offer... Emotionally attached to some extent, but not to the point of unrealistic hope. Then you have the people who sell their cars like they are rare fine works of art. They refuse to sell for less than their "perceived" worth. Price is driven by what others are asking, not what they have into the car. Prime example I noticed at an event. A car was parked with a posted asking price... a very similar car pulls up and posted an asking price $10,000 higher than the first car. Instead of keeping the original price, the first seller ups his asking price to make his car seem just as valuable. I truly don't think emotional attachment drives prices, greed does.

They've been a plague around here. Mostly they plop down in the coffee places with a coffee (or not) and suck up WiFi for 6-8 hours straight. Then when they sell their screenplay (or whatever) they get some classic car to tool around in... the local Luftgekhult events were filthy with 'em.

Sweet pics.

Didn't see a single pork pie hat, though.

Are air-cooled Porsches ironic?

techweenie 04-23-2015 07:34 AM

Yes, they are ironic.

You can drive one while wearing this shirt.

Nice shirt. Wasn't that guy the lead singer for Thin Lizzy?
