3.4 liter built race engine -Price Check-
 

I just picked up a new race car, and it has a beautiful, less than 8 hours, 3.4 liter built by Jae Lee of Mirage International.

This thing is amazing. Runs on TWM ITB's, Haltech, MSD Ignition. Single plug, 11ish to 1 compression. Tuned on race gas. Full build sheets available. I even have 3 different cam setups for the engine.

Engine:
3.4L motor bored out from 3.2 carrera motor
Mahle race pistons and cylinders
Pauter rods
Jetted crank for more oil flow
Magnafluxed all components
ARP fasteners
New bearings
New valve train (titanium)
Big race cam currently installed. 2 sets of spare cams included (RSR spec and Elgin milder profile)
SCarGo race headers
TWM intake stacks, individual throttle bodies
Haltech F10x engine management system, dyno tuned
MSD ignition system with selectable redline RPM cutoff

I have dyno sheets for 300WHP on a conservative tune.

Long story short, I think this is just far too much motor for me. I'm just getting started in racing, and think a stock 3.6 is a bit more my speed. Plus, I'd like to save a little extra money for tires and the expenditures of racing :).

All the parts and hardware make me think this engine should be priced around 32-34k complete drop in, but I'd like to hear your thoughts...

I've no idea of value but sounds like you couldn't get near that build for under $20k P/L

Well.......there are 4 or 5 993-bodied race cars currently on the market that have that identical or very similar engine in them, all priced around $35-39k. Offloading the motor for 90% of that cost may prove difficult.

Good news is that it's built to a 3.4 displacement and not 3.6, which means it will have value to a PCA racer in addition to NASA/POC. Regardless of the cost and based solely on the value of the cars it goes into, I'd think you'll top out around $15k if you can find a buyer.

I was referring to the "build" meaning cost to build, not what I'd expect it to sell for.

15k is way too cheap! That's stock 3.6 pricing...

I'd say $25-28k, you're not going to pocket that much $$ to swap out motors with a good 3.6, I'd say drive the piss out of it an d get your money's worth, the extra HP is not going to get you in that much trouble.

Enjoy that badass motor, maybe its more power than you think you need but you'll grow used to it and you don't have to use it all, but eventually you will.

Keep it and use it You'll never get enough pout of it to make it worth selling

I suspect paying Jae to build that engine would cost you around $35k. I know he is charging at least that much on Singer's engines. But you can only sell it for 50-65% of build cost. Not worth the trouble. A 3.6 swap will cost you $25k to do right. Keep it and get used to it.

While I'm sure the 3.4 race motor is very badass, a stock 3.6 doesn't give up THAT much to it, does it?

What he said, right now you have a "known" engine, from a respected engined builder, and most likely an "unknown" engine.

While I agree with you, another piece of this that I failed to mention earlier is I would be very happy with a motor that I can use standard street gas on...

I'll trade you a really nice condition stock '78 SC 3.0 for it. I'll even pay freight on both. :)

LOL, yes, that is an important part, we replaced the race motor in the turbo for the same reason, $12 a gallon hurts when you have a hour Guage instead of a fuel guage. That makes sense now.

Indeed. I think I could get this thing down to a mix of street and race gas, especially if I swapped to the less aggressive RSR cam but I think I'll be able to find someone who wants a pretty much fresh 3.4 just as it is...

Assuming the engine is well sorted and runs with no issues I agree that you would be better off using what you have versus changing to a 3.6 liter. Having Jae locally is a big help. I don't think you will get anywhere near $32k for the engine alone unfortunately, and whatever you do get will be consumed by the 3.6 swap.

I had a similar 3.4 (but with carbs) and ran it on 100 octane. I buy 110 and mix it 50/50 with premium to reduce the cost. Transporting fuel cans is worth it for the money saved. Set up an account with CFN and buy your fuel on the way to the track to save more money.
