Languishing over longhood prices no longer

Sick of the absurd increase in classic 911 values? Move on.....it's fun and a lot less aggravating.

I'll still mess around with my 911 race cars, but the market is stupid and frankly I've lost the hobbyist passion as single replacement parts/pieces encroach upon my initial purchase price of the car!

These should tide me over until the market softens:

Air cooled porsche prices are headed for Ferrari country, if you want an air cooled car buy now.

I remember when a used 246 Dino could be bought in the teen's, look at them now.

930 turbos are leading the way, low miles 505 cars and early cars, 76 to 79 are doing well also.
A factory 505 car sold for $360,000 ball park with fees, in less than 5 years, 1/2 million.

I just bought a '70 BMW 2800CS. 4 speed in Polaris/Navy with AC. It will be a big project but the time is now to buy. They will go crazy like long hoods in the next 3-5 years.

Nice!

It's the sticker shock that makes these things fun....I had an "Oh, f&%k" moment when I started digging through the red one and realized it was missing a water pump, thermostat, start, slave cylinder and coil. An hour of internet research later, no problem, $300 TOTAL!!!

I recently bought a fairly rare fixed roof 1993 300zx. It's normally aspirated and a five speed two seater. It's a great driver. Every time I drive it I am reminded that there are great cars out there that are a blast to drive that are still available for throw-away money like the old days with the air cooled Porsches.

I also picked up a 71 XJ6 (series one) that is all original. It's such a beautiful car. I've been thinking it would be fun to do some suspension tuning, fun hot rod intake and exhaust mods to get more of the song out of that motor, which is the same 4.2 that they put in the E-Types and every other Jaguar for like 50 years.

My point in all of this is that there are other cars out there that can satisfy your tinkering bug. What is missing unfortunately when compared to Porsches is the robust, mature enthusiast community that makes Porsche ownership so much fun.

I think the turbo market was undervalued 5 years ago, it's improved a lot with a lot of up side potential for the exceptional examples. Increased valuations on these cars will raise values across the board.

david,
There are only two car clubs/groups that add value to their respective marques due to active & knowledgeable enthusiasts: Porsche & Ferrari.

Hmmm, maybe I was wrong.
Looks like I don't know "Jack".
Great projects you have. The trend these days is to put back to stock as they left Longbridge (factory color/interior) to get the most out of them when resold. But make it what you want and enjoy.
Check this group out when you get a chance.

If you want to tinker on the (relative) cheap...get a 70's Chevy. Any model, and kind. You can source anything for the drivetrain at ANY auto parts store. There are more parts for a SBC than any other motor ever made. Trans rebuild 400-500 bucks. Eaton posi rear end 1000 bucks. Crate motor from summit 2-5000 bucks. You can redo most of the interior by yourself. And they are all climbing in price, but no so that you'll be concerned to drive it. And Hagerty insures them cheaply. But then, I'm a Camaro guy, so my bias is obviously strong.

Always thought it'd be fun to get an old G body (Skylark/Cutlass/Malibu etc) and futz around in it. Convertible with a bad top in need of replacement would be my choice as the top would be down at all times anyway.

All 3 of those are excellent choices. If I was younger and had some skills measuring things, I would get an old Dart and put a ford turbo 2k in it. I loved my turbo T-Bird, and that motor in a sleeper Dart would rock!
