Does the correct targa top really matter in valuation?

I've got an 83SC targa and original targa top is shelved because I luckily found a solid factory top from a 75 911 targa. No noise, no leaks, feels like a coupe so I love it but do I need to keep the factory top that needs freshened. Will it matter in values down the road if I sold it off. Car has front lid with respray otherwise original paint. Interior was rotten because of the previously leaky targa top so I found the cancan red sport seats and other interior in lieu of tan standard seats and new carpet to install otherwise factory. Not selling solid top so should I also keep the folding top. Opinions appreciated.

As far as I know there are no differences in the T-top from 75 to 83. I would not mind buying a car that had the top replaced. But keep the original for parts and in case you want to sell to someone who is fanatic about originality - but how anyone would be any the wiser about the top not being original to the car is beyond me.

Coa would tell a buyer the hard top is not original. I wouldn't sell it. They aren't getting any cheaper.

Sure? I never saw any numbers on them and I did restore 2 of them.

I think you should keep both tops. When you do finally sell the car, sell it with the original top and sell the '75 solid top separately. Those '75 tops are rare and I'm sure would command a premium when you sell it.

1974 and 1975 are the only years of the hard top that I know of. Those years there was an M436 option for a folding top.

I've never seen an option code for the hard top. But if the SC was originally delivered with one, it would contain an option code on the COA and on the sticker inside of the frunk showing that it was original to the car.

A buyer might not care that they got the hard top, but that top is kind of rare. I sure wouldn't sell the original folding top. I'd keep it until I sell the car and then sell the hard top for a pretty penny.

Just curious, what $ value do you place on a "pretty penny" (ie factory hard top). I saw one quite some time ago in the classifieds for $2500. I have no idea if it actually fetched that price, though.

To the OP, I'd keep both tops.

To Pmax - I don't think anyone is discussing aftermarket tops. I have a '75 with the factory hardtop. I thought it was a '75 year only part, but I'll defer to Matt in this regard, so a 2-year only piece, and still pretty rare, I'd guess.

Yeah, a couple grand is a pretty penny. Have you seen what just rebuild able cores for soft tops sell for? We used to sell nice used ones at Carquip for less than a core today.
