1972 911 S Coupé restoration project

Hi Guys,

I am considering to do the unthinkable, to let go of my 1972 911 S Coupé restoration project. This are the two threads I have started about the car:

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/498618-72-911-s-coupe-restoration-project.html

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/548948-1972-911-s-coupe-please-help-me-id-odd-brackets-rallye-racing.html

Sold new by Glöckler in Germany in early 1972. My problem is that this car definately is a rally car. Unfortunately I havent been able to find any history, I just know it competed before it left Germany for Sweden around 1985. So I am hesistant to start restoring it, just to find out it has an interesting story behind it, and needs to be restored into a rally car.

Also, with the prices skyrocketing, I simply dont know if I have the knowledge and patience to restore it to the standard it deserves. And I dont know if I want to drive around in a perfect $250k car (God only knows how much it will be worth finished in 5 years). This was my unicorn, but I am questioning if that is the case anymore.

It is a non-matching car with just an empty 1972 911 S block included. Gearbox seems to be matching, as is the gauges. It was a complete running car but I have torn it down to the bare shell. It has some rust and some dents in the floor, nothing crazy but still. The roof is replaced with a non-sunroof clip (it left the factory as a sunroof car), and a used sunroof roof clip i available. As is Porsche OEM complete 1972 rear quarters, nice doors, And a lot of body parts, except the front fenders which really should be bought new.

Any thoughts about value? Any europeans here with an idea? Where do I sell it?

Regards,

Johan

Just for future reference since no-one responded; the above car is sold, and without disclosing the selling price out of respect for the buyer, I can say that I can buy a very nice Ferrari for the money....

So if you have a 911 S project I recommend to ask around and speak to a lot of different buyers. I would definatley recommend to sell to a restoration shop like I did. I had several buyers, but the shops realized the value, where the ordinary person didnt.

I had quite a few laughs as well! One guy (flipper) tried to convince me the value was about half what I got paid for it; when he called me up to rase his offer I told him it was sold, and just said that he could always buy another 72S project. His response: "-but there isnt any other 72s projects for sale in Europe" and I just said "-well you should have paid market price for mine then".... 😛

My conclusion is that there are so many flippers out there trying to make a deal on longhoods, that advertizing it isnt a good experience. Send an email to 20-30 shops instead! Anyone in the same situation as me is always welcome to PM me for more information.

Regards,
Johan

It ceases to be a hobby when flippers can make a living at it.

I have a '70S that when the day comes to sell it I am dreading the process. If I placed it on the Early S Registry the rivet counters get all upset because even though I have a 2.2 MFI installed it does not have the case and gearbox it left the factory with. It also lacks history and had a color change. I have no idea what it worth so maybe calling the restoration shops is the way to go. I sold my '61 E-Type last year to a dealer and it was such a smooth transaction.

So you let Prince Albert out of the can, sorry, someone had to say it..

1972 is my all time favorite year. You might say, my 1st real 911 education came from an old German Mechanic who worked for Smothers Brothers racing team.
