Got my 996tt up on the lift today. Shot a photo just for Christian.

Let's see...964 part number...oil return tube bosses...scavenge side oil return fitting and pipe...nope, no way that's a 911.

Build quality - jeez, this POS had a huge puddle under it before I could even get it up in the air. Oh wait, that was just all the water from the prodigious air conditioning system. Yeah, no leaks on this 15 year old non-911.

LOL.

List now, fix later. Your legal obligation to make sure it can pass smog doesn't leave CA. What if you sell it out of state? Plus in this market many wont care. I would buy a car that doesn't pass smog and fix it myself.

Westy 07-11-2015 05:10 PM

Yup,,,Thought about that Matt. Probably 99+ % that the car will leave Cali. Good news is leakdown test was less than 5% on all six, and compression was excellent. It's only low RPM. Initially these cars we're allowed 2.5 hydrocarbon, but CA has seen fit to reduce it to 1.0. Pretty fair, huh?

Matt Monson 07-11-2015 06:21 PM

Yep, there's a very good reason I had been '74 shopping. Colorado has copied CA's emmision laws in most every way, including tailpipe standards.

75 is the cutoff in CA. Smog Information

Beyond this, smog is a bit of a red herring these days as many states permit special purpose registrations for old cars that do not require testing. Here in OR the option is available once the car is 25 years old.

I'm well aware if that. It is the cut off here too but there are a bunch of changes to the '75 911 that I didn't want on my car, not smog based. We don't have the allowances you speak of. I lived in CA for 30 years and COfor the last 15. I've been playing the smog game since I got licensed.

Sorry to hear that but as Matt says, it will almost certainly leave the state. As long as you are confident in the health of the engine, I'd get it up. You'll certainly enjoy the premium of a CA car in terms of rust.

I've found a ton of pictures really helps, especially of ones showing any defects, big and small. People appreciate it and no one likes surprises.

Good luck!

I'm takin the advice. Got plans today, but then I'm gonna compile all the receipts, take a few more flicks, get a shine on it, and make the list of everything that's been done.

It was a $130K plus car, new. and that means one thing: repair costs are more or less the same no matter what you pay for the car. So I paid in the $40K range, and if I want my car to stop randomly (though rarely) popping out of 2nd on hard deceleration, it's $3K or so to fix. If/when the coolant pipe fitttings deteriorate on the engine, it's $4K or so.

On the upside, I sold my last longhood hot rod for 2X what I have in my 996 TT. There is a 996 TT on Rennlist the guy uses - a lot. He has over 350K miles on it.

Bang for buck, there's nothing like it.

What is the opinion on the 997.1 & 997.2 Turbos? It appears an 07 is now a $60,000 car, an 08 Cab for $80,000.....

I just bought an '09 997 Cab (which is still 997.1). Lovely car, absolutely ridiculous combination of performance, comfort, and luxury and the "Turbo" badge on the rear gives it just a touch of 'exotic' as compared to its naturally aspirated brethren.

I sold my '79 930 and "replaced" it with the 997tt cab. No regrets, I was ready for something different. I wouldn't consider it a substitute for the 930, its apples and oranges. The level of refinement is very high on the 997, so there is less "drama" than the aircooled turbo. They both devour asphalt.

Subaru Sti, Mitsu Evo, Mazda MS3, neon srt4................probably 50% of modern FI Cars

Sorry I couldn't resist. Aschen is waiting for 45k 997TTs

Farrell 07-17-2015 01:32 PM

I've seen 997.1 turbos in the 50k range. I want to see them hit in the 40's.

So does anyone think the 996 will rise above the 997 for a short period?

Ha. 'Another car' in the context of a Porsche forum does not mean Japanese sport compact, but to each his own. I've ridden in a tweaked STI. Maybe not the best example, but yawn. I know it wasn't too hard to get another 30+ HP in my 951, but the turbo 911s give you serious bang for the tuning/tweaking buck.

Westy 07-17-2015 04:56 PM

I would have to ask...What the he!! is wrong with 415 hp in a car that weighs less than my left leg???

Caveat.......I tend to exaggerate sometime!
