I keep hearing that I can buy a decent SC in the teens but Im not seeing them ANYWHERE. Is that just a pipe dream or are they out there? The decent ones Im seeing are starting in the mid $20k's.

Maybe you're hearing echoes from a few years ago. Or you're listening to the wrong people.

Reddy is correct. They're nowhere at that price.
If you search high and low, and really search hard, you might find some decent aircooled cars in the low $20's, but you'll really have to look everywhere, and dedicate some serious time to it, not just time online.

Are Rennlisters telling you that? I've found they are about a year or more behind on their air cooled valuations. I saw them recently tell a guy his rough but running '74 targa was worth $6-8k, $10k tops if he fixed a few things. I would have bought that car in an instant. Instead I helped him see the real market price, made him an offer, and he decided to keep the car because he felt he couldn't afford to replace it and keeping it was costing him nothing.

You wouldn't know it by looking at their classifieds.

Aircooled, water-cooled -- doesn't matter. The sellers are REALLY proud of their cars over there.

I think they've started listening to me and a few others. OP has same thread over there and is getting similar answers. That wasn't the case 6 months ago. Learning is being shown.

And yes, the classifieds are expensive. Very different than pelican. Virtually no project cars. And top market price on anything average. Slow to sell too. However guys using the classifieds are largely not frequently posting members.

Back in '08 I was shopping Boxsters, and called on a Rennlist ad in Colorado Springs. Car was an '03 S in Seal Gray, and the guy had just bought a Carrera 4S, so he said he was motivated -- but was asking something like $5k over retail for the car -- because he said it was completely perfect.

I said it was too high, and asked if he was flexible, and he wasn't sure, but asked me to come look at it anyway -- I think he just wanted to talk about his cars. It was close, so I went. It was pretty much perfect, and he has not going to budge price wise, so I chatted for a bit, and made to leave -- but he really wanted me to test drive it.

I told him it was $5k over retail, and that was $8k over my budget, and I didn't want to waste his time. He insisted I drive it. Well, OK. We took it out for a drive. He had dropped $3k on new Pirelli Nero tires 6 months before, but hadn't driven them at all - car had 17k miles, and maybe 50 on the tires. And they were already flat spotted from sitting. We went through the neighborhood, and I turned back around and he said "You have to take it on the highway." I tried to beg off, reminding him there was no way I was going to buy his car -- didn't matter -- take it to the highway.

Well, Ok. We go a mile down the road, and another car kicks up a pebble that stars the windshield of his showroom perfect car. I thought the old guy might stroke out.

He was surprisingly cool about it, and said it was his fault. I thanked him and apologized, and left. He kept the car on sale for over a year, never dropping the price.

That experience affected my impression of Rennlist classifieds -- lots of owners who factor in their emotional attachment in the price of their cars, and view them as art objects more than driving machines.

That could also be a Colorado thing. I'm currently Boxster shopping. Everything on the market in 986es is $2-3k over book. And many of them have been out there for 2 months or more. Just today one of those cars popped up in the classifieds. That's the first markdown I've seen on that car and it's still super high. I suspect people here consider them rare and unique.

I've located a car in CA that gets a PPI on Tuesday. A couple grand less than local cars, has $5k in maintenance and refurbishment in the last 24 months, and the only real downside is that it has been driven more than all these CO cars. I'm planning to fly out and drive it home.

You may right. I ended up buying a CPO 2005 S in Albuquerque for $3k less than the ask for that old guy's 2003 -- which was reassuring given the IMS issues at the time.

I flew out there and drove it back. Hell of a good time. It was a gorgeous car: white with chocolate brown full leather, and a brand new set of 2010 wheels:

How's the insurance on the Boxster as a DD compared to the SC collector rates ?


Going back to the OP's query, SC's for under 20k, sure you can buy them now, if you don't mind the special modifications or high mileage.

Almost every SC I've seen in the teens includes a tag that says: "Some assembly required"

... or decent could simply mean runs and drives without anything falling apart or rust everywhere.

I consider "decent" to mean it is intact (all trim & interior), not rusty, starts, runs, shifts, drives, and stops. For an SC, that means it doesn't need a transmission rebuild or new clutch, and it has no broken headstuds.

The car has a lot of potential, but the fact it has been sitting in the marketplace for 2 weeks at that price -- with no engine shots -- makes me think there is something seriously amiss. Like broken head studs and a lot of associated oil leaks. You know what the red fan screams....

But seller says PPI is welcome, so if it checks out, this could be a rare bargain.

And...it appears to have sold within three hours of being posted.

Running, driving SCs under $20k are underpriced. Even gnarly orange repaints with shabby red interiors.

I am floored that this car sold in a few hours, obviously for a price similar or right on target of the asking price. Guess I better re-revaluate what I have. Geeeeez,,,seriously????
