BUTT Rich, does she luv long time?!?!?

Matt Monson 07-20-2015 05:15 PM

If you can't pick it up immediately to a title and cash swap. My '74 is still in CA getting body and paint. I have paid for it in full and am laying for the work like I would lay for a remodel. Sent a materials deposit last week. I will send more when I see some progress pictures. I will pay the balance when I pick it up in person in Aug or Sept.

I have the title here in Colorado. It is legally my car. We have a very loosely written contract confirmed by email by all parties. Sign and scan stuff if the email isn't enough. But it's my title and my car. I am confident in that.

I agree that "public negotiation" is not productive. Rich had a question. If I was Rich and the buyer spoke up in my thread I might kill the deal and look for another buyer. Rich didn't accuse the guy of anything and just wanted education and advice. Joining pelican just to defend oneself from a non-attack would miff me. But maybe that's just me.

Mike wants to give small deposits, escrow accounts, wants to wait until Labor Day to pick it up, afraid I'll sell it out from under him....he's never bought or sold a car sight unseen. Then he has bought a bunch that way...he's never shipped a car, then he's shipped a bunch.... WTF

Take Toms word if not mine....
Just fly out and pick the F'n thing up already...agreed upon price $35.5, if no hassles

Wow. I'd be happy to show anyone our email string that refutes everything you've stated in this post. Per our phone conversation, I told you that I've bought and shipped many cars sight unseen but nothing to this quality and monetary value. Maybe you recall you and I talking about my 1969 C10 daily driver or my 65 Cadillac. I think you have a very selective memory Rich. I've offered to give up a deposit so you know I'm serious and not wasting your time. I've offered to set up the escrow with a title office in your town and find it today. For some reason, you get spooked when I ask for an address so I can get shipping in order. That question was met with an answer of "I think you should look for a car locally". As for a wire transfer, you did ask me to do it. I have that email as well. I've asked what my deadline is for retrieving the car with cash in hand is so I can get my schedule in order. That was met with an answer of "let me me speak with my wife". I've told you I'm happy to fly up but I'm ALREADY doing so on Labor Day so I offered to pay for storage. This is ridiculous. It's obvious you do not want to let go of the car. Good luck road blocking the next committed, not potential, buyer. I hope the PPI I paid for helps you out.

Well, I'm not sure why this entire exchange is being laundered on a public forum. There is no reason why we, Pelicanites, should be weighing in on a private party transaction, other than to give generic opinions and advice.

At this point in this ugly transaction, someone's got to step up and do something. It happens in every deal. In all fairness to both parties, there's a fair bit of nasty paranoia going on here.

This started out as a nice and fair transaction. Come on boys, kiss and make up.

Mike, spend the $500 (UA roundtrip DFW/SFO) and fly out to buy the car this weekend. The car is worth it as you know. Arrange the shipping in advance and have it picked up or delivered to the shipping company while you're there. Bring a cashiers/bank check for the full amount.

Rich, cooperate. He sounds like a real buyer.

If you guys can't get it together, you both lose.

No doubt the car is worth every penny. It's beautifully maintained and Tom spoke very highly of it. The fact is, I'd get on a plane today. I've asked for some concessions to my schedule and the response to my private question was answered on a public forum. That being said, I'm not confident that Rich would sell me the car if I showed up with a handful of cash. I do appreciate everyone backing up that escrow is certainly the way handle a long distance transaction. I lost sleep last night over this and now the car, to me, has lost its lustre. I'll find one eventually. Unfortunately I've watched prices skyrocket throughout my, now, four month hunt.

LSM and RG, I have no idea what the truth is in this back and forth, but you two are on different planets. Why are either ONE of you here posting about this stuff? This is a train wreck, and each of you is driving a train. This is becoming a great example of how to NOT work a deal.

Hopefully both of you will calm down and call each other. Rich wants to sell his car, you want to buy it. Call him or he should call you and hit the reset button on the deal.

This. The drama level is being escalated on both sides.

Rich Gas 07-21-2015 07:29 AM

I was just asking a question here as Matt pointed out.
He ended the deal this morning. I told him, after reading about his fathers connection again, that I would talk to my wife, about the timing to pick up the car. He couldn't wait 24 hours for an answer.

1. He is not a real buyer.
2. He wasted my time
3. Tom did the PPI for him, I don't have it
4. He probably doesn't have the money
5. He called me a tough guy, and insulted me on this forum and privately

The deal is called off.

NYNick 07-21-2015 07:32 AM

Sorry Rich. You'll find another.

Matt Monson 07-21-2015 07:42 AM

Rich,
Don't sweat it. There will be another buyer. Don't bother defending your actions any further if Mike keeps posting. It benefits neither you nor your sale.

Rich, thank you and I will wear that compliment like a gleaming badge of pride!

Now stop dodging all the car money whistling past yer ears - think what The Hound would do if a pizza, or ten, was nearby!

Matt Monson 07-21-2015 09:03 AM

There goes the neighborhood, the hound has entered the Marketplace.

Ronnie's.930 07-21-2015 09:19 AM

Rich, so you're no longer selling it (am I reading that right)? Man, for some reason, that is really good to read - sweet!

And regarding the hound's farts; not to worry as I've got my HAZMAT suit ready!

Otter74 07-21-2015 09:38 AM

I have nothing to say about this little mini-drama, and cast no aspersions on anybody, but I will say that based on the information on the ad Rich had up at one time, and what he told me in a message when I asked about it, that Rich's car sounds like quite a nice one for the money, and that I generally support people keeping their 911s if they are not sure they really want to part with them!

vracer 07-21-2015 09:52 AM

This is an unbelievable (almost literally) thread. Can you imagine these two guys negotiating something like the Iranian arms deal?

It seems easy to understand to me; among other things, Rich got a "seller's remorse" gut check before he actually sold it - it happens. I sold a Ducati 748R racebike that I co-owned with my brother, many years ago, and was floored by the level of regret I felt as it changed hands (and the price was good - had nothing to do with it). Unfortunate about the PPI money spent, but that's how it goes sometimes.

dienstuhr 07-21-2015 11:34 AM

I guess it's true what PML said so many months ago about buyers and sellers not meeting in the marketplace :-(

Seriously, though, sorry that you guys couldn't work it out.

d.

Rich Gas 07-21-2015 12:00 PM

I feel like I'm being punked...where are the cameras. I was ready and willing to sell, but now I'm glad I didn't. If this was a scam or some sick joke, I could believe it. Surreal. I'm extremely paranoid right now.

Hey Dick (vracer), I thought we were buds? Early 74 shenanigans in Burlingame, remember.

Winter 07-21-2015 12:11 PM

Don't be paranoid.

I've bought cars at distance and I've purchased and sold locally, but never sold to a remote buyer.

Obviously a Local buyer with cash in hand is always the simplest and best.

But as a remote buyer I did everything within my power to make things simple and easy for the seller.

Just move on. It's your car, and ultimately the deal needs to feel comfortable for you and be easy for you. No fault in holding out for what feels comfortable to you.

Good luck!
